Questions about drag racing the 3.1
I was talking to a friend today about what my 92 V6 5-speed Firebird would run in the 1/4 mile. I know it is pretty slow, but what do they run stock? Also, what rpm's do you guys launch at and shift at w/ the 3.1? It seems to run out of breath around 4400 rpm or so. Just curious, I will probably G-Tech it for grins and giggles.

I'm no good at manuals as I rarely have the opportunity to practice on one... but I understand that the LHO will run you 16.5 if the car is tuned and running good. Soooo i'd imagine a
16.2 -16.3 is possible with a 5spd and good driver.

My personal opinion/theory is to shift it at around 5 grand. If it feels like you're running out of breath past 4400, it's because you ARE! The LH0 hits its peak horsepower at 4400 exactly, but the car doesn't yellow-line until 5500. Does this strike anybody besides me as particularly odd?? I figure shifting at around 5,000 won't run you too far past your horsepower peak, but at the same time won't drop you into too low rpms. Feel free to prove me wrong though! I own an auto with a broken tach.
Also, 17 on a quarter mile sounds about dead-on for an auto...should be a tad quicker with a stick. I'm betting on a cool day I'll run a 16.9. EVEN THOUGH the car is an auto with a sluggish throttle, and a lagging transmission, I KNOW It'll run a 16.9!

guess theres no diff in a auto and a stick if his gf can run a 17.8 in 100 degree weather and i can do a 17.8 with an auto in 120 degree weather!

Do you guys know how ungodly slow 17.8 is? Be wary of sprints and fireflys.. they'll eat you up. I also heard micras, ponys, and metros can be real beasts. By todays standards 15's and even 14's is slow.

Yeah...sad isn't it? They invented NOS for guys like us...
Yep, stock these cars are pretty slow. That being said, the cars are still pretty fun to drive, and have style. Besides, GM wouldn't have made any of the V8 cars without selling a pile of the 6 cylinder ones to keep the cost of production down! In fact, they claim that is what killed of the Camaro/firebird platform now... The people that usually buy the V6 cars, about 65% of the total production, weren't buying Camaros and Firebirds. They were buying Mustangs, Eclipses, and other names instead.

That reminds me; I got a GTech last year for christmas and never took it out of the box and hooked it up. Oops.
Maybe I'll do that this weekend.

I'd be out flogging the thing as soon as I opened the package and read the first few sentences of every section of the manual!

Bear in mind, when I say 'NOS', I refer to the chemical nitrous not the brand... I probably wouldn't buy a NOS brand kit...I'd go with maybe Zex or Nitrous Express. Venom is giving away a Palm Pilot with NOS kit purchases now!
Not that I'd actually need or even use one..but still....makes people like me go "OH WOW COOL!"

Can't wait to get mine to the strip, considering I just turned 18 eleven days ago..no more parent consent! Although I think I'm going to cry when I see my ET...even with the exhaust, cap and rotor, plugs, and timing chain... (That's everything I'll have done by the time I go.)

Mat's just another one of those V-8 guys that think they're so much better and smarter than us 'pathetic sixers'.. I get sick of it.
Im runnin 16.5 with intake exhaust plugs wires and a ghetto ram set up (poppin the headlight out and runnin a hose right to the intake at the track only of course.) Stock i went 17.2 wit the 75 shot im hopefully gettin i should be in the 15's. And with the headers i hope to order off here soon who knows.
