Exhaust System
Okay - so I know you'll all say "Use the Search Button, dumba$$", but I want a human's opinion. I went to my local perforamce store and got a quote on a Borla cat-back system. The guy said something like $800, but I've heard less. Can anyone give me any ideas, as I am new to all of this. I've got an 89 RS with a 91 3.1 out of a 91 Firebird. Thanks all....

800 is entirely too much for a catback system. Flowmaster and Dynoman make catback systems that go from 150 to 300.

I got both a Borla cat back and a Flowmaster which is on my car for wright now. I bought the Borla cat back off of here for 400 brand new and hasnt been opened untill I got it in my house. I m waiting till I slap the 3.4 in my car before I put it on. The flowmaster system cost me about 140 if that much. What are you looking to buy? If you can wait I ll sell ya my entire flow system cheap. Hit me up w/ a PM and I ll tell ya more.

Dynomax and Flowmaster make the 2 most popular cat-backs for our cars. In my opinion most go with the Dynomax because of the 2.5 inch intermediate pipe as compared to the 3 inch on the Flowmaster..............The Dynomax will then produce the much needed back pressure our V6's need and also give it nice rumble, also a lot of guys say the flowmaster is too annoying on a V6.........just my opinion.
And YES, $800 is way to much for a cat-back.........you can pick one up for under $200

Then I added a catco high flow converter 69.99 and the 50.00 in labor covered that install too.

Mistake #1: Going to a local performance store. Only time it's not a mistake? If you're a millionaire and don't care about being overcharged.
Why the mistake? Well, that system, BOR-14888, sells for $529 through http://www.summitracing.com ! Hop to the website and punch the # in, comes up with a full description of the system.
Mistake #2: Real people wrote the messages available through the search feature.
But do you really need a stainless steel exhaust? Sure it'll last forever... but $530's still a lot of change to put into an exhaust that won't give you much (if any!!) more horsepower than a cheaper flowmaster or Dynomax cat-back system. WLK-17493 is the number for the Dynomax super-turbo catback. Dynomax also makes an ultra flo cat-back, WLK-17391, which has the same pipes that come with the super turbo cat-back, but you get a stainless steel Ultra-flo muffler instead. Get the full specs on the systems and both muffler designs at http://www.dynomax.com - Click on Products, click on passenger car, click on "domestic", then (near the top next to the pic of the mustang) click on "gm applications".
And I'll say what I tell everyone else- Install the system yourself. I've done 3 of 'em so far on my garage floor.

Oh and that Borla system, just like the Dynomax one, is a direct bolt-in. So the shop's charging you an extra $250 to put the car on a lift, cut the old exhaust off, and bolt the new one on. Doesn't seem like $250 of work to me! Or was that $800 without installation? What BrianK was charged seems reasonable.

Thanks for all your help everyone. The $800 was installed - still a rip-off, which is why I am asking the "tech" guys here on the board. I have learned quite a bit here and have only been a member about a month. I appreciate everyones input and will continue to visit. I want to get the best quality exhaust for my money so I am leaning towards the Dynomax Super Turbo. If anyone knows of any better deals, post soon or it'll be too late...

Also, as stated in my sig, I am accepting all performance improvement suggestions, but remember - I am on a tight budget and new to the performance aspect of upgrades so I dont know much about doing the work myself....
