Fuel smell....

Hey, I get out of my car sometime and I smell gasoline... Is this normal or should I check something? My cap is on tighly, 3 clicks, but the odor is really strong when I get out of it after going somewhere. Is it fumes from exhaust or gas not burning.....or should I change my fuel filter. I don't know just wondering.
Thanks

Did you know about the filler neck safety recall? Look it up at http://www.alldata.com and call your dealer. Pinholes could develop at the seam between the fill neck and tank, and cause a fuel smell or fuel leak on the 91-92 f-bodies. (Not sure if this extended to 90, I think it started in '91.)

Well, I did find the recall notice, but I don't know if it was fixed since I have had the car, only 2nd owner and since I smell the gas........probs not. Will I have to pay for it or will pontiac pay.....Kinda curious how that works, and how long that they accept responsibilty.

They'll run your VIN and find out if it was brought in or not... if not, they'll bring it in, and perform the inspection, and possibly tank replacement, for free. That's what's special about a "safety recall" as opposed to other recalls.

Just like the seat belt recall, which I hope all of us know about, and have had the work done for.

could also be a hole in your gas tank. they like to rust out at the top from people not filling the tank all the way up.

I have an 86 and I get the same smell after a hard run. I see what looks like a pressure bleed of valve attached to the tank. I suspect thats where the smell comes from. I dont see any leaks and rust isn't a problem in Az. The smell isn't all the time only after a long run. I just figure it is normal.

I had that, as well as my car not running quite right. Turned out to be a broken spark plug wire, in the boot. New wires, and she runs fine - no more gas smell! Could also be a leaky injector?

Well, they're idiots then. Did you do what I said, to go look up the data yourself at http://www.alldata.com ? You can even get the recall from the government's website, which I think is http://www.nhtsa.com (nat'l highway traffic safety administration). Get the recall # then go call another dealer... because sounds like even if you do point that dealer that you called in the right direction, they'll either refuse to do the work, or do a shtty job.
