what's the diff. between 7mm & 8mm PLUGWIRES??
what's the diff. between 7mm & 8mm PLUGWIRES??
Do 8mm (or 8.8 or 7.5 or whatever else) really make a sigificant difference over 7mm on v6 cars???? the store only had 7mm, so i bought them...i am now contemplating whether or not to take them back and order 8mm. So really, give it to me straight, whats the difference??

Extra insulation = less spark leak. You wouldn't want to run a higher voltage coil with those 7mm's... 'fact, I'd doubt you want to run on those wires at all- stock factory size was 7.5mm. We have the exact same ignition system as the v8 guys do- 'fact, we get a bit more spark out of the system because we only have 6 cylinders. Our coil gets a bit more saturation time, because on a v8, for one revolution, the coil's gotta fire 8 times for them- only 6 times for us.
Go thru summit racing for wires... what'd you pay for those?

7mm is fine for a stock ignition system, but if you have a high energy coil, module and an electronic spark discharge box like I do, then you need at least 8mm. I currently have Crane Cam 8mm wires and they are fine.
I do have some MSD 8.5mm wires that I took off an old V8 Mustang, but they had the old style boots so I had to tweak them a bit to stay locked on the distributor. The wires were long too, but that did not seem to matter. If you want MSD wires, which are very good, you will have to order a universal set. Since you will have to cut and crimp the wires anyways, you might as well get the V8 set and have an extra set of wires. I going to put the MSDs back on my car when I get the proper distributor boots for them.

Yeah, if you buy pre-made v8 sets, the wires will be super-long. I use MSD's "Super Conductor" 8.5mm universal wire set, but for a v8, part #MSD-31199, so I get the extra 2 plug wires like Devianb mentioned. Part #MSD-31197 just comes with 6 wires. (# at the end = how many wires you get, adding 1 wire for the spark-coil-to-distributor-cap). The kit comes with a little tool that helps you cut the wires, strip the wires, and crimp the terminals on.
Another advantage to making your own wires is that you can run them any way you want. My wires are run up over my valve covers. Easy to get to, less chance of spark leak, and looks pretty cool, too.
The first wire change I ever did, using stock 7.5mm autolite wires, was hell, because I was trying to route them the way the factory wires were- around the edges of the motor, stuck in cheap wire clips, ugh... it sucked.

I bought a universal V6 7mm set from Autozone a while back but trashed them. Had them all booted and everything, but I noticed the distributor clip ons weren't round socket type clips..they were open on two sides, so instead of making solid contact all the way around, they made contact at only 3 small points , at two sides of the terminal, and the top corners (not even the dead top, because the wire things were rounded like a U, and my posts are flat... Caused f---d up spark transmission.. Got some Belden 7mm's on now, they're decent enough...stock ignition. I sure do miss my Autozones though....they were bright blue. Nothing spruces up an engine bay like bright wires...the stupid Belden's are faded black.
