How high can your engine rev

I was just curious about how high you guys have gotten your 2.8l - 3.4l to rev. When I first got my car, I could barely reach 4000 rpm. Now my engine can rev to 5500rpm and I think it could have gone even higher if my rev limiter had not kicked in. Looks like I am going to have to raise the rev limiter on my Accel box to 6000. By the way, I have an automatic transmission.

The engine really screams at 5500 rpm. It was a bizzarre sound to hear when I first heard it.

My car's probably gone to AT LEAST 5500.. Let me put it this way...WOT, if I don't release the gas to drop tranny pressure and force a shift, the car audibly tops out before shifting. I dont know what the computer or whatever kills the revs at....if it even does..all I know is the engine tone gets HORRIFIC and just flat-out stops changing... Considering the redline is way up there around 6,000, I'm guessing it's hit that on more than one occasion. Damn transmission.

Highest I was at was about 5800; thought I was in third once when I was racing, pushed the stick forward to grab 4th, and oops, grabbed neutral instead.

MUAHAHAHAA!!!

Automatic? Psh... 5 speed here - pushed her to 6500 ONCE when I missed 3rd, and stomped the gas - just saw the tach spin up REAL quick.

Racing, I shift 5000-5500. Realistically, the stock cam in my '88 tops out around 4600 or so (well, from what my rear is telling me) so about 5200 or so drops me square onto the torque band coming back up. With a new cam, and some exhaust/intake/head work, I'm sure a 6k powerband is achievable.

I'm a bit worried as to how much rpm the stock valvetrain can handle tho - I haven't experienced any valve float yet *knock on wood*

It's been raining here since I put the 5-speed in. A couple times i'd start off in first and the rear wheel would start spinning and my RPM's just SHOOT up to about 5000 until I let off the gas and regain traction. The highest it's seen was about 5500 once. Other than that, I rarely go over 3,000 rpm during daily driving.

I'll say this though: Since I put the 5-speed in, the 3.1 loves to spin now. The engine sounds better and runs better. With the 700r4, my engine sounded like it was in pain whenever I took it over 3,000 rpm.

It all depends, Like everyone else 5000-5500 but once I get moving and the ram air kicks in, mine wil pull hard to 6000

1st gear 40mph 7300rpm (when my tranny went out and I temporarly hated my car, weve settled our differences now.)

Not to flame, but...to pull 7300, you'd have to have some serious mods.. Lightweight connecting rods, crankshaft, etc. I would think our engines have too much stroke and rotational mass to be able to pull that many revs.

Cali...changing your transmission affected your engine behavior? Hmm.. Mine used to sound nice. Now it sounds like it's wheezing at idle, coughing at a quick idle, in pain to 3000-3500, and dying 3500-whatever my shift point is.... Has this nasty grumbly, harsh tone to it. My baby dont love me much anymore....she used to run so nice!

Choking a cat? That's a new noise.......lol.... I dont even wanna know what kind of rpms I've pulled before...let's just say, insane. My car hits 2nd gear WOT at maybe 30 mph or so, revving pretty high...or so it sounds. Its reluctant to hit 3rd gear...it'll go to about 75 mph screaming like a bat out of hell and barely holding foreward momentum in 2nd!

It's wierd dude. With the automatic, it felt like the 3.1 was pulling a 5 ton vehicle. It didn't like accelerating at all and it made wierd grumbling noises under load. Now, the car feels lighter. It goes when I tell it to and it doesn't strain.

Overall, the drivetrain is quieter and the engine sounds better. Only problem I have is that the engine just doesn't run right for the first 20 seconds when I start it in the morning. *shrug* Doesn't bother me that much.

my car hits atleast 6000 at WOT. the auto tranny doesn't shift any sooner unless you roll out of the gas a little. it runs out of power around 5500 though.

Yeah, the T5 only weighs about 80-90 lbs. We installed it without a jack. 1st gear is different also. The T5 has a 4:1 1st but it runs through the gear very quickly. It still pulls well in all gears though. 5th and 4th are almost identical and 3rd and 2nd are similar when you compare them to the V6 700r4 gears. 1st gear is the extra gear.

mine pulls right to 5500 then i shift, although, i have had the car to well over 7000 while in neutral, i tend to not pass 5600-5700 while racing. after 5500, it's just pointless.

THE ONLY TRUE ADVANTAGE to going over 4000rpm is to get the next upshift into the "powerband" better.
These things can't rev past 4-4500 & make power, it only makes noise.
Valve Springs, keep going over 5K & springs'll shatter.
YOU CAN DO THAT (over 5K) but it only beats on engine.
My S-10 Blazer engine?
Blazer (auto) "Stuck in first gear" until I could make/get tranny to upshift at 5500K or more.
It was only wasted effort.

Dude, there's a thing called punctuation. Please learn it, practice it, and use it in everyday life.

Any car will rev to 7300 for maybe a week if your lucky.

YES... It is very nice!!! Only down side is traction. Hit the gas a little to hard and the tires spin all the way through first and leave a nice cloud of smoke. Not good for a race!! I tried several differnt brands of tires and can't find one that helps.

BTW I have rev'd to 6500RPM, but Karl is right the only use of going above 4500 RPM is to make sure your next gear is above 2500 RPM. any lower than 2500 RPM and and your next gear will suck big time. racing the 2.8 and 3.1's can be tricky if don't watch your RPM's. I learned power band by finding an empty country road and doing 15 runs through all gears. You'll know when hit the right combo. It will feel sweet!

think I reached 6 or a little over awhile back, ever since the whole msd setup though the tach drops way down at around 5200 like it's not reading but I don't do that often so I never really worried about it.
