Hypertech Chips?

Wow it's been a while since I started a thread! But anyway... I currently have a Hypertech chip in my 3.1L Camaro. I've read much controversy about these chips and as I've read a few things lately I'm half tempted to think that it is causing me some problems perhaps. Should I put the stock chip back in? Would I be better off trying to find someone burn me a custom prom for my car and it's mods? I never really researched this before putting it in the car. One thing that is nice about it though is that I can rev higher (it's a A4) at WOT. Any thoughts are appreciated. Thanks!

If your having issues with car, and that may be the problem, slap stock back in for a few days and see if issues are still around. Wont hurt a bit.

Gen notes I have read on this board say OTC chips suck. I would say look into getting equipment to burn one if you have alot of mods on engine.

However, I am going to have a extra ecm and OTC chip for mine when we test run it, or plan to show off.

I doubt a chip would cause you any problems, except maybe pinging or knocking when you get on the throttle from the chip advancing the timing too much for 87 octane gas....some of the chips require that you run at least 91 octane for that very problem... But a custom burned PROM, if it was done decently, SHOULD be better than a manufactured chip because more care and research went into it because it was developed SPECIFICALLY based on specific information for our cars...the Hypertechs probably aren't as detailed.

I just looked at your site.

IMO, you need to upgrade that ignition system!!!

Love the seats and blister hood. I just got my iroc hood a few days ago, have had blisters laying around for a while now. Time to get car running RIGHT and paint the hood/blisters.

Need good weather to paint them first

For about $300, you can buy all the stuff needed to program your own chips. The software does all the work, it's not full of techno-geek computer work. After that initial investment of $300, all it costs is the price of a blank chip. Heck, you can even score a laptop for $75 off e-bay!

Hey WWasem,
I just viewed your site too. Your RS could be our twin. 'Cept yours is a lot nicer! I am going to strip the clearcoat off our rims and try to posish them to look as good as yours. I did a small spot with Mother's aluminum polish and my Dremel with a soft pad and it looks great.

A lot of people hate the factory flame red (that's the fact. color) interior but I love it. Camaros are supposed to be "loud" visually. THe black seats fit in well too.

It looks like I have a LOT of work to do!

Eric

Dale - I've been thinking about doing that. What would be my best bet to upgrade to? An MSD 6A Box? I'm not very familiar with this aspect of aftermarket for our V6s.

Eric - I had bought the rims on my car and had them refinished at a local wheel shop. They did a SUPREME job! I had all four done, and then 4 new tires mounted and balanced and everything. They drive like a dream! Yeah I've had people flame the interior before when I had the matching red seats in it saying "it looks like a clown car" or crap like that, I always like it, it stood out, and now with the leather, I think it screams Camaro :hail: Also another key element to those rims are the center caps, I bought 4 brand new ones on E-Bay for about $50 or so! And as far as I hear I got a pretty good deal on them! They make the rims look a lot better alone.

I've been thinking about buying what is needed to do my own custom prom burning but haven't really researched it yet. I've got a few little issues to work out, maybe upgrade the ignition, and I need to install the headers yet.

And yes I'm running 91 octane fuel at the pumps as well.

A msd6a box will be a waist of money if you dont do the other things for it first.

Need to get a good coil, a thread was around few days ago and gen consis was that the hypertech coil is the "best". The accell doesn't put out as much as the others, and the msd coil put out "to much".

IMO accell is good for the $.

Then on next tune up get some good 8 or 8.5mm spirol core wires. NOT accell's though.

Brass cap/rotor

Your best choice of plug.

Then, look into the msd6a box. From what I have read on a few sites, the price for what you get is not really worth it for the $$. Unless you find a nice used one cheap

ok heres gonna be the deal with laptops...

Right now I have 2. 1 needs a floppy drive, the other works fine for data logging.
I should be having a third ordered today, and if things continue like this I wil be having around 9 or 10 comming by summer. I do not have the specifics on the coming ones yet, but there is NOTHING wrong with them, and and only 1-2 years old(supposedly)
I will be putting the vast majority on ebay to raise funds for my engine build/swap for the summer I will sell 1 to of those to someone on the board cheap, along with 2 of the three that I have now after all are working correctly.

I will be putting the tuner cat software in my email today, I tried yesterday, but I was too full. I had to remove the editor first. opps. Oh well.

List of supplies are as follows
burner www.ustr.net the good one is 110-115, also sold on ebay for 80-95
Software see me, or someone that I send it too.
Chips, see ebay forget the chip type, see traxions article it has it in it.
I have the TDF for the 90-92 Camaro 3.1 and THATS ALL, I DO NOT HAVE THE 2.8 ONE! I also do not know if both are the same..
I have the *BIN file for the 90-92 3.1 as well.
