Shift light comes on
2 weeks ago my shifter **** broke and I couldn't engage the shifter in any gear except neutral and drive so I had to turn the engine off and park it in neutral, but the key was stuck. Thats when the Shift light came on. I got a replacement shifter and it works fine.
The problem is, any time I press on the gas at any speed over 35mph, the Shift light comes on, and then goes off when I release the pedal. Any suggestions on why this light comes on.
The weird thing is that the trans operates like it always did, but now the shift light comes. Any answers?

Um, you mean on constantly, or untill you shift?
If its on constantly, yes there is something wrong. If comes on untill you shift, thats normal. Suppoesedly, if you shift when the light comes on you "get the best MPG".

It stays on all the time if I am on the gas at over 35 mph and stays on until let off the gas, then it goes out. Any speed under 35 mph at any rpm and it does not come on.
I know very little about transmissions. The shift light never came on before and the transmission doesn't shift differently than it used too. If it is normal, how do I go back to not having the light show at all?

yes I do have an auto and a light comes on. I thought what the hell. I didn't know I had one and I have never seen that light before. Maybe it might go away if I reset the computer.
The light says shift with an up arrow above it. It only stays on when I press on the gas.

Whenever the TCC locks ups. The ShiftLight/TCC share the same circuit and ECM driver. Shift light for a stick car, TCC for an auto car. So by inserting a bulb into the shift socket you can now tell whenever the TCC is locked. Cool, huh?!

The thing is, the light never came on before. 2 weeks ago I was taking the orange condom covers off the bulbs in the guage cluster. I could not see all the light sockets in the back so some I had to feel my way to put bulb back. I may have put a bulb in the wrong socket. I don't have my tools here at school, so I will have to wait until I go home to investigate. I bet that is why the light comes on.

Devian -- I would suggest turningthe ignition to "on" and see what lights come on. Should be brake, fasten belts and SES light. maybe the SES bulb was put in the shift area?

The shift light does not come on at all until I go past 35 mph and my foot is on the gas.

Yes but if the dash is back together you would know what goes where. Turn the key on with the motor off and see what lights light up. If "fasten belts", "SES" or "Brake" (if E-brake is on) light up -- the bulb should have gone in the dash for illumination. If one of the above don't light, the shift bulb goes there.

Does this run right off the ECM? I've always wanted to rig up a "real" shift light (like a window RPM switch) to that bulb... but always figured I'd have to take the dash out and stick my own bulb & socket in there. I'm gonna have to dig the manual out tonight! Thanks for the info!! Thread Starter

Ok, I took some pics of my guage cluster on the on position and while driving at 70 mph. My seat belt light did not come on, so obviously I misplaced a bulb.
What I need to know is, what SES light goes where? Or, where should the seat belt light show up.
