2.8 to 3.1
2.8 to 3.1
K guys, You can scrap that 4.3 idea, Ok, I found a 3.1 V6 with a 4 speed overdrive auto tranny for 300 dollars with a 1 year warrenty, What things would have to be swapped for this to work or will it just pop right in?

2.8 and 3.1 are essentially the same motor..the 3.1 is just a 2.8 with a stroke kit. However, the computers are different in several ways. One of which is, 2.8's were MAF cars. 3.1's used a Speed Density system utilizing an MAP sensor. So you'll have to make sure the new motor has the Map sensor and vacuum line for it, and a functional computer for it.

as Karl would say: "Make the 3.1 lok exactly like the 2.8 you replaced it with,....minus the 2.8 MPFI circle" :nono:
I swapped in a 3.4 in place of the 2.8. Nothing major had to be done. I swapped the 3.4 injectors into the 2.8 fuel rail and swapped all the externals from the 2.8 over. ie, intake, brackets, mounts, sensors. By using the original intake and sensors, the original computer can be used as well. The engine runs great. The only thing I can give you a heads up on is that I didn't replace the water pump or timing chain for financial reasons. This means I didn't change the harmonic balancer. The 3.4 balancer does not have a timing mark, so I had to time it strictly by ear and performance. Other than that, it is really a simple swaps as far as motors go.

what yr 3.4? mine (balancer) has a timing mark on it, just like all the Poncho 400 have them. I just transferred the timing teeth off the 2.8 & used one of the water pump bolts to hold it on. When I go to time it, I will use my multimeter & ears.
