F*#*& Haynes Manual
Well , I decided to lube my speedo cable , before it broke . I went by the Haynes manual and did what they said , except when I got ready to pull th instrument manual out just a tad bit to lube it , it would not come out . I even took th dashpad off to see if I can get to the cable . NO LUCK , so when I put everythng back together , my gas gauge , voltmeter , rpm and oil pressure none of it works !

I bet the connectors that go into the gauge cluster arent in all the way. Or the copper wires on the back came off of the plastic tic tac thing. I had to superglue mine back on so everything would work properly.

Well I think its time to take the dash apart again, and turn the key off and on while puting it back together to check that everything is working properly.
New idea, if it isn't broken don't fix it yet wayne
Just j/k man. There is no way to learn unless we make mistakes. Good luck, I am sure it will come back together after a few more hours of tedious work. Last edited by Joe_L; Feb 6, 2003 at 06:41 PM.

Joe...
Great words of encouragement. Need more people like you in this world.
Wayne...
Guess it is time to take it back apart and inspect everything.

heh , Thanx guys !! Well , I do have good luck with most things actually , but I dont post on those b/c I get them fixed when they break , altenators , powersteering pumps , tune-ups , distributo re-builds , and a few more things .
I decided to go ahead and fix it before it broke because the other two times the speedo cable broke , the needle started bouncing and I did not know it needed lubing .
I REALLY surprised myself when I took my old head unit out and put my new one in . Dad got me a Sony XPLOD for Christmas . Not one of those real loud faced one ,but a black face one .

Yeah, I don't think I'd go by the Haynes for pulling a dash apart. Dropping a fuel tank or rear axle, yeah, not for a dash.
You mean you couldn't find the clip to un-do the speedo cable from the speedometer?

the whole haynes manual in 3 steps
1. Remove broken/damaged/faulty part
2. Repair or replace part
3. Installation is reverse of removal

Lol..amen to that. I hate that damn Haynes manual. And half of its information is incorrect. Took me 3 days to learn how to check timing on the new car, because the Haynes manual said Ford's equivalent to our....ohhh my *** it's been too long, I DON'T REMEMBER WHAT IT'S CALLED!!! The...the.....thing you unplug to check base timing....wait..the EST pigtail right? Please tell me I'm right...I don't want to be forgetting crap with the Camaro already...
Butttttt...point being, the Haynes manual said it was a single wire connector, and made a point of saying that, but it's actually a dual wire connector. It also said on my Camaro that the ECM fuse was on the driver's side, near the battery, when most of us know it's on the passenger side by the charcoal can.....

When my needle started bouncing I just bought a new speedometer cable part #25033662 for about $24 from gmpartsdirect. To heck with Haynes, I just figured it out on my own and it does not bounce, especially after finding a brand new 145mph speedo on e-bay

You guys really should spring for the GM Service Manual. Haynes' book is good for an "intro" to the car; how to do brakes photograph-by-photograph (won't find that in the GM book!), how to check/replace oil, etc.
It's also surprisingly accurate for things like rebuilding a master cylinder or rear disc caliper, dropping a gas tank, and swapping a trans/rear axle/engine. The torque specs at the beginning of the chapters are dead on, and much easier to find than in the GM service manual. The suspension chapter is also a good one, and points out every piece of the suspension with a real photograph.
But once you get beyond the basics, you need the GM/Helms service manual. If anyone here tried to diagnose an SES light with the Haynes book, or do electrical/sensor diagnostics, I think I'd have to smack them- with the GM service manual, upside the head. And That would hurt!
Like I posted once a lonnng time ago, sometimes you can find them on eBay for cheap... much cheaper than http://www.helminc.com . And a book off ebay woudl probably be broken in already. My service manual, after years of use (bought it right after I got my car, in '94), has now fallen apart into three easy-to-carry sections. And the front and back cover can stay safely in my room while I bring each section out.
(sigh) Sometimes I toy with the idea of buying a new one... but then I wonder how fast I'll ruin the new one.

Haha, yeah, I figure it's better to look on the good side (3 easy to carry pieces) instead of "Oh hell, my book fell apart."
You probably don't need to pull more of the dash out; did you at least see the speedo cable poking into the back of the speedo? I did this on a friend's '87 Camaro; you need a screwdriver to reach the clip and pop it free.

You sure about that? I thought Haynes Publishing wasn't owned by anyone. And I looked at both manuals side by side in Pep Boys back in '94, and decided the Haynes was much more worth my time. Bought the Haynes after I bought my GM book.
And if someone's reading this and doesn't have the GM book yet, GO GET ONE! http://www.helminc.com !! Or http://www.ebay.com !! GO NOW!

I worekd at pep boys for a while on one damn slow day i looked all over one of those haynes manuals. somewhere in tiny print it says on it produced by chiltons. I have found haynes manuals to be utterly usless. not a damn thing in there that ever helped me.
