Fuel pump replace

So, I guess the pump in my '89 RS W/ 2.8, 5spd, is dead. Rather than pull the tank, can I access the top of the tank through the sheet metal above, by cutting a panel out? Anybody ever do this? Where can I get a picture of the tank and FP assy on the web? Drop a line if you can, thx.

I realize this might save you time if you plan to replace it again in the future, but I would strongly suggest not cutting into the car.

I'm doing mine tonight, but I'm dropping the tank. I'll let you know how it goes.

With all this being said, it's your car. http://www.taekwondoplus.org/z28/fuelpump.html

Doing it the correct way takes no longer than hacking up your car.

I've done it twice by dropping the tank; and I'd do it a third and fourth and fifth time by dropping the tank, too. It's not "hard", it's just a lot of annoying work. (Breaking bolts free, craning your neck up to get all the heat shield bolts out, trying to wiggle a heavy tank over your head that doesn't want to come out, etc)

DO NOT CUT YOUR FLOOR... that would be the singlehanded most idiotic thing you could do...do it the right way i did mine and it took me 8 hrs...before you start check the fuse by the canister under the hood on the left side there will be a black box the size about a doller folleded up it will be connected to the fender...remove the clip and out comes a fuse..make sure its not blown..

Hacking the floor board

I guess I was just testing the water. I think that maybe there is a problem with the circuit somewhere. There is no power going to the connector at the tank except low power for the sender. The fuel pump is not getting voltage. The fuse under the dash is ok. The fuel pump relay may be out but I haven't got the diagram yet that shows which relay is which. I am not aware of the fuse on the left side near the vacuum pod, I'll check there too. Thanks for these responses. I have been known to singlehandedly destroy even the simplest of projects with an idea that wanders thru this graying matter. I am not a typical hack and cut kinda guy. Most of what I do is professional and diligent. But you know those wild hairs sometimes. I'll post later.

If you do end up replacing the pump, only took me 5 hours last night, with help from a friend. Wouldn't have been nearly that bad if it weren't for the rusted bolts and the fully welded exhaust. No need to cut the floor board.
