motor oil viscosity...

I currently use 10w-30 motor oil. But I was thinking about getting 10w-40. Does 10w-40 provide better protection against heat? What about 5w-30? I here 5w-30 is recommended for new cars...providing better protection/economy. Synthetic is too expensive for me.

I run 10w-40. Better range of temperature protection. It's slightly thicker.
