Drop the TBI in, and put your MPFI intake/heads on there. The crank may be difference between the two tho - might need the flexplate from the TBI as well!
Well Yes & no
Yes TBI2.8 is a dog.
Serious, it's the cam & POSSIBLY the valve size of heads.
I'll bet it's all same as my 85 Blazer 2.8 carb & they just changed the distributor & intake for better emissions.
What can ya do is very simple yet it's pain in butt-
rebuild MPFI Heads (larger valves size) & add a newer cam & ya good to go back with more power.
WATCH OUT FOR OLD VALVE SPRINGS!
Also make sure all valve guides replaced.
Slap it back together & it'll work well.
Hope you scored a good option.
When in doubt, remove ALL balancers & flexplates, then reinstall a matched set of those items.
IF ya want more "power"?
Shave the heads slightly to bump up compression.
PS go easy as then ya can have intake mating problems, too!

thanks a lot Karl i knew youd have my answers.. one more thing, for the heads and cam , can i take all that off of my 2.8mpfi, cause it lapped a crank bearing and destroyed the crank... my heads/cam/intake/injectors should still be useable right?

No, not really.
Sounds like...
You're taking the bottom end from one running vehicle....
Upgrading to the MPFI cam,
Adding the MPFI heads
Utilizing your existing MPFI intake & ignition system.
That is a good mix.
IN THIS INSTANCE
I would seek out a new replacement cam for the MPFI
WHY?
With my old MPFI 2.8, my cam was "damaged" (I blew the engine due to lack of water-bottom hose burst off rad).
Logic is that you are obtaining new fresh parts (rings, bearings, oil pump, chain).
Spend the extra for the cam & lifters & definetly freshen up (new valve guides & match spring pressures) heads & IT SHOULD WORK WELL.
NO NEED TO go hog wild on this rebuild, it'll move the vehicle.
Sounds like ya can even sell the left over parts if needed, also.
You should be able to get away with a cheap "freshening" of a rebuild.
Good luck with the purchasing of the "rebuilding parts".
You need obtain a "gasket kit for the engine" that WAS in the car.
Make sure you do get correct rear main seal gasket for the "current to be used engine block".
Examine the timing chain covers for use of the best one
