Somethings melting, eek

I went out and poped the hood on my 85 camaro and noticed that from the A/C compressor, the 2 hoses connected to it have a fresh burn spot in them and the hoses in the burn spot look melted. theres no belt or anything that could rub on them that i could see. Im stumped

Ill run out and get a pic of it.

I'm just happy I guessed right that you've got an '85.

Does the A/C work (blowing cold air)? Just wondering if your a/c system is still pressurized with freon... if it is, I'd imagine if those hoses burnt thru, it'd be pretty explosive.

Im not sure if the AC works i havent tried it and im not sure if the system is pressurized. I really dont want to start it up and try the AC just in case it does burn thru and well you know.

Heres the pix of the spots

First thought- the compressor pulley slung some oil onto the hoses. (The metal plate over the top of the pulley is an oil splash shield) That would also explain the "smear" on the fuel pressure hose closest to the top of the a/c compressor.

Second thought- a belt snapped, and "bit" into the hoses. The previous owner replaced the belt.

Third thought- None of those would really cause a burn mark... did you ask on the general tech board?

I went out there again and wiped away some of the oily mess and the lines look to be fine but the oil is like thick grease or something???

Sounds like good ol' sludge. If the lines are fine, don't worry about it. Is the rest of the engine greasy? I'm betting a hunk of sludge hit the belt, and got slung on the hoses. Clean your engine compartment!

the 2 above the ones with the grease on them are the fuel lines. I went out there and it was just grease from the compressor that was flung on to the hoses. The lines themselfs look fine undernether the grease.

If the a/c compressor is causing a problem, you can always yank the drivebelt from it. If it's an old drivebelt (looks glazed and has cracks), you may as well just cut it with a knife and throw it away; then you don't have to take the other two belts off. And if all 3 are old, think about changing the belts soon...
