when the computer senses something wrong with the motor, it throws a code. This results in the check engine light coming on. if you turn the car off, jumper the 2 right most terminals on the top of the ALDL connector, and thurn the ignition to "ON," it will spit a code out by flashing the "Check Engine" light. You can find the ALDL connector on under the steering column, to the right hand side. Just stick a paper clip in the top right hand corner and turn it to on. You can find a write up of all the codes in the tech section of this site. It's normal for a car to spit out code "12," which means that there is no reference voltage at the ICM, that's because the car is not running. It's important that you do not start the car with the terminals jumpered as you will not get any codes, just turn it to "On." Hope this helps.

the blinks represent numbers. "blink" = 1 , "blink, blink" =2, etc.

Your check engine light will go "blink...... blink, blink" (hence code 12) 3 times before it displays a real code, and will do the same for each subsequent code until all are displayed. when all are displayed, it will go "blink..... blink, blink" all over again.
