Ready to Kill

First of all, NOBODY has Raybestos or Bendix or even Wagner brake hoses around here! Pep Boys says their Pro-Stop hoses are re-packaged Raybestos; but I'm not sure if I'm buying that idea- never mind that the side of the one box had been slit open with a freakin blade knife!!

Second of all, I go to the damned dealer to ask him for 4 crush washers (copper washers) for the brake hoses, two per side, so I need 4. He can't find a part number for me!! Told me to go to Home Depot. I have the part number at home!! I figured the damn dealer could look that SOB up and save me 5 minutes. Instead, I wasted 30 minutes at the friggin dealer while he finished with other customers and then STARED at the diagram of an f-body front brakes for 10 minutes!!

I swear... I can't believe this is so friggin difficult. Am I the only smart person left around Jersey??? How can NOBODY get me a Bendix hose?? Pep Boys looked at me as if to say "Who's Bendix?" and then told me they don't carry them. DAMN!!! There's all freakin morons running these places!!!

Yep.. go the summit route... or hit Autozone or Advance Auto. Advance carries Bendix, and Autozone carries 1LE, I think!

Well; two things... I need brake lines asap, and two, I don't really want stainless braided lines. Supposedly they can crack inside, and you can't tell any warning signs.

Just called Advance auto, (no autozones even remotely near me, about 20 miles away!), takes a day to get Bendix in, guy hasn't heard of Raybestos. Morons!!

It's okay, I'm better now... just visited one of my favorite internet sites... Click here! Man that's some funny stuff!

Are you talking about the rubber lines that connect to your front brake calipers? Or the entire brake line?

You should get new crush washers with the new hose. That is if you find or get one that you like.

Cheap is not better but i goto parts america for my brake stuff. remaned calipers for $10 each makes a new brake job easy.

Last time I bought new front hoses (1996), they didn't come with the washers either... (sigh)

Well I went to another Pep Boys. They had both hoses, in boxes that weren't cut open, and the box -does- say "raybestos" on the bottom, so why not, I'll give it a shot.

I asked the guy about crush washers and figured he'd look at me blankly- he said "We keep them behind the counter now" and put the pull-out drawer (that's usually in the hardware aisle) in front of me. Yep, they had them!! Got six of them; 4 for tomorrow morning, 2 as spares.

I did something stupid though; I took both hoses out of their boxes to inspect them- and forgot which hose goes with which box. Both hoses look identical to me; everything is in the same spot. Any ideas as to why they have different part numbers? I'm going to go with my "gut" and say that they're the same hose, and everyone just gives them different part numbers for shts and giggles... unless anyone has a better idea?

Oh and what was wrong with that link I gave, Doward? The Happy Tree Friends kick butt! There's so much random action in those that it's funny! (At least, to me it's funny... )

Crush washer tip: to reuse a crush washer heat it dull red hot and drop it in some cold water. This will anneal it and make it dead soft again. Can use a stove top or a propane torch (like for plumbing).

Would you believe metal shop in HS. Made ashtrays out of copper sheet by hammering them into a wooden mold. Needed to be annealed several times as the hammering work hardens the copper. Works for brass too.

Sorry to jump in on your topic here TomP, but while we're on the subject of brakes. I'm doing my rear brake rebuild tomorrow. I bought new cylinders, but I don't know if they are the right ones. Everyone lists a metric threaded cylinder and a US threaded cylinder. They don't know which one goes on my car. I found out that with certain differentials they used metric starting in '84, but they still used both threads till '88. F***ing morons. I even called a GM dealer, and they didn't know.

Anyways, I posted this here in the V6 forum on a different thread, and in the brakes forum, and total, I got one reply. But I'm not sure it's correct.

Anyone know? It would be a great help.

Tom,
When ya remove the OLD brake hose, check the metal cut out at the fitment to caliper.
That's how ya tell one sie to other and if ya goof, ya'll know upon tightening up!
That's how I found out. I goofed & discovered.....
After ya drive/roadtest a bit, retighten the front hoses.
Mine became ever so slightly loose & were corrected as I had someone else install new rear hose line & bleed all four brakes.
Wheel cylinder.
IT's a slip fitting attaching brake wheel cylinder to the backing plate. No nuts or bolts.
IT SUCKS to remove the old slip fitting, easy to install new one, tho!
Atleast it that way on rear brakes of my 1985 car & my 1985 Blazer, too!
