Representing all the v6's
i won the local camaro/firebird car show tonight! woohoo! Who would of thought my little v6 would beat out about 20 v8's/. Yeah the show was super small and they probably took pity on me for bein a girl and having a v6 but heck yeah! i won baby! hehe. Sorry I had to brag, this is the 1st show I won lol.
To keep this post techinical, is there any trick to loosening the bolt on my distributor? I need to adjust my timing back to 10 degrees and I can't seem to get to the nut. Any suggestions?

Got two options....On my v6 there was a 5/8 bolt so i couldn't use the normal L wrench they use for pulling distributors...(they usually come in 9/16 and 1/2). Check to see what size your bolt is and use the L wrench if possible (AUtozone/O'reileys should have it, it should be labeled distributor wrench).
If you have a 5/8 bolt, your gonna need something called a crow's foot that hooks on to a socket extension, get a universal extension with it so you can swivel the wrench a bit. You can buy the crow's foot at sears for like $7, basically its an open ended wrench with a hole for the socket extension....good luck.

as far as the distrib bolt situation...
I went ahead and got the 1/2" zig zag bar, and a cheap 5/8 shallow socket and welded it onto the zig zag bar. a little fine tuning (bending here and there) and it works great.
Good job on the win too...

you can get it out by unpluggin the wires that go to the distrib from the coil, then using a 3/8in drive and about 9 in of extension with a universal joint and the correct socket
then once u get it out u can do like i did and grind it down to being 1/2 in
then u can use that L-wrench...assuming u have one
awesome on the win....do u have any pics so we can see what it takes?

I used a 15mm wrench, shortty style that wal-mart sells for 10 bux. It was a pain to break loose, but once it was loose, it was easy going.
Congrats on car-show. I was pumped the first one I won also.

Go to a real parts store. No Kragen, Auto Zone or Pep Boys. Go to a indepent parts store. Ask for a 15mm Distrib wrench for a 2.8 or 3.1. Same wrench, but depending on the manufacture it will be listed for a 2.8 or 3.1. They will most likely have to order it, but it is worth it. Makes the job so much easier!!!! I paid $28 and guard it with my life! I spent 1 and 1/2 hours with the parts guy going through catalogs looking for the thing. It has more bends then the L wrenches they use on V8's and clears all of the crap including the ignition model.
When I get home tonight I will see if there is manufacture and part number on mine. I can't remember who makes it.

I believe my distributor bolt is 15mm, and I haven't found an L-wrench of that size. I like to use a combination wrench and come in from the side... severely burning my hand in the process.

thanks guys. My boyfriend has all the tools but he's just having one heck of a time getting to it cuz there is a cable in the way. As for working on the car, I just wanted to see if can do it myself. Sorta like a learning experience. I don't mind getting a little dirty sometimes lol. thanks again!

Thats why I searched and searched for the the wrench. I travel about 2 - 2 and 1/2 hours one way to work everyday and and don't have time to screw around with it.
Every time I would get the timing on the mark I would to tighten up the bolt hit the wire and knock of time. With this wrench I don't end up touch the distrib or the wires. Makes it whole hell of a lot easier!!!
Do you have pics of the car??

I took a 15mm wrench and put the boxed end into a table top vise. then i put a put a vice grip on the open end. lit up the torch and heated the the boxed end until it was red and pulled on the vise grip a bit, rinse and repeat. presto L 15mm wrench.
oh wait no, not that easy. the first "made in china" wench broke immediatly. then i took a lifetime warranty type and it worked out.
Congrats on the win
:hail:
my V6 bird lookes better than 80% of the rusted out saskatchewan f-bodies i see.
wonder if I can win something, if not a race vs. a V8

Just incase any one is interested here's the number off the my distrib wrench. VIM V118. I'm not sure exactly who the manufacture is, but I will see if I can locate the receipt. I tend to keep just about every receipt.
