Engine Re-assembly

Ok, after about 2 hours worth of searching, I'm just going to ask you guys and hope I get a quick reply....

We're putting my engine back together after taking most of it apart for engine detailing and I've run into two problems...

First problem is behind the alternator... the alternator has a bracket behind it with three holes in it. The bottom hole goes through several brackets and the alternator. The top hole also goes through the top of the alternator and a few brackets, bolting in place. The middle hole butts up against another bracket mounted just in front of the EGR, but I cannot for the life of me remember what bolted up there! Similarly, I have a missing bolt for the bracketry that holds the ignition coil in place. The other bolt I threaded into the hole, but this one is just missing. I don't recall dropping any bolts, which makes me think there's a component missing here, but my Haynes and Chiltons, and "in progress" pictures aren't helping me. Can someone shed some light on this?

What goes in the middle alternator bracket hole, and am I missing something? There's the coil, the egr, and the alternator and a misc bracket that I can't seem to see what it does!

My other question is in the center intake manifold (the part that hooks to the upper plenum, to help house the fuel rail). There are two bolt holes on the inside of the center intake that don't bolt up to the upper plenum, besides the two that hold the fuel rail. One holds the throttle cable bracketry. What does the smaller one hold?

We're putting things together fastly. I'm trying to re-loom everything and get the wires as close to factory as possible, but factory tends to use yards of electrical tape. I'm using the plastic t-fittings, which is more organized, but doesn't give as much freedom of movement. Most of the passenger side of the engine got put together today, as well as the center intake and the fuel rail, but we're stumped on these things and I think I'm about to say forget it for a bit and try to start on the passenger side. We were hoping to get the car running again by Sat. after a few monthes of working on it.

Thanks a ton to anyone who can answer these quickly.

Oh damn. Sorry Tom! You're right, that would help. I'm work'n on a '92 Camaro 3.1. I'm trying to get pictures of the offending areas, but my digi cam is being a pain in the *** today and I can't get the pictures on the pc yet.

Stay tuned. I was hoping to get the car running Sat. but I dunno now...

Ok, still can't get my pics off the camera. I'm wondering if the cable went bad or something. This thing's got a rechargeable battery though that's caused me problems before, so I'm gonna recharge and try again, the pics are still in the camera, that's a plus.

I talked to the Chevy parts guy, when I went to order some gaskets for my EGR, and he showed me a generic diagram of the offending area on the back of the alternator and it showed the ECM mounted there. Was that an option on any camaro's to have the ECM in the engine bay? If that's the case, then maybe my missing hole doesn't do anything and I just misplaced a bolt....

I still don't have a clue on the extra hole inside the center intake manifold.

Any help would be appreciated here guys. The only j/y I know around here with 3.1's in it pulls the motor and rebuilds them or sells them used, so that's no help. I know a guy with a 3.1 firebird, but I can't get a hold of him.

Oh well. I was hoping to get the car running Sat. or Sun. but those gaskets aren't going to show up 'til Monday or so, so I'm screwed anyways.

Ok, I finally said f**k windows and tried Linux, and I got my pictures off my camera, so here's the extra bolt hole in the central intake that I can't figure out what it goes to....

Ok, and here's the back of the alternator. (#1)There's a bracket there (the black and rusty one), that appears to let something bolt through the back of the alternator. Also, #2 in the picture is a missing bolt hole, where the ignition coil bracketry attaches. Am I just missing a bolt here, or does something else bolt down with it?

I just pulled off my exhuast manifolds to replace gaskets and bolts and patch up the y-pipe, so i know this area. mine is an 87 but it seems very similar.

I looks to me like you lost a bolt for ign coil. on mine two bolts hold it down and nothing else.

There is bracket that comes off two bolt or studs on the top front of the exhuast manifold and bolt the bracket thats attached to the alt. it usually works best to bolt it to the alt first then tighened the exuasht manifold bolts (that you have barley start in their treads beforehand, you may see why).

it looks like you installed your middle intake is in upside down, i thing that hole is for the linkage. i can't see if there is a bolt hole under the linkage in that pic, but if there isn't..... oh wait looks like you got the fuel rail on, so thats doesn't matter, i don't think mine has a hole there.

That is a hole to bolt down your fuel lines with a bracket.
