3rd Gen curse, no start
3rd Gen curse, no start
Hi guys, how many of us are having the heat soaked starter problem causing no start conditions? Im just wondering because I have the problem, and quite a number of 3rd gens have reported the same thing. When the engine cools down for about 15 mins. the car starts right up. Please say what kind of car. I would like to write a letter to GM and tell them how widespread this is. Thanks

don't have the issue yet , knocking on wood but i'd also highly doubt that GM would do anything to fix it. If the cars were still new and being produced i'm sure a recall would be in order, but at this point, the oldest third gens are 21 years old, they can officially sit down and have a drink, while the newest ones are 11, young but not young enough. If we were all having this problem in say 1993-94 or so, i'm sure something may have been done, givin a good portion of cars were still under warranty, but now, eh...best of luck. hope you solve ur problems though.
Yes, I agree with you 100%. I would just like to let them know how upsetting the problem is to 3rd gen car lovers. And ask them for a possible fix. Hey one never knows unless you try.

Yep me too, takes mine like 45 min to fix itself tho, some "reflective heat" tape works good for like 20 bones

Wallace, the starter won't spin at all? Weird... maybe you just need a new starter? I've never had this problem... 257,000 miles and still ticking- not on the original starter, of course- but I'd imagine if the problem were somewhat common, I would've experienced it by now... or maybe I'm just lucky!

I found that heat soaked starter is sometimes a myth. As it only seams to be the heat. I found it was them remaned starters do not have the threads taped deep enough in the solinode. SO it works fine when cold but once it warms up, you get that hot starter syndrom. I figure it out by wiggling on the wires and you could see the whole end plastic cap of it move. I tried to tighten them up my self but no go. and them starters just go back into the system and get passed around.

So far so good guys, I have the heat shield installed. It's the one from Jeg's that wraps around the starter. $25 I will be doing an
experiment soon. I will drive her to Joliet, Ill which is about 45 mins. away. That's where NASCAR, and NHRA races. Hopefully she will start right back up when I shut her down.

I had this problem when I first bought this car used back in '96. On my car it was traced back to the VATS. Mechanic wired the ignition to bypass the VATS chip system, and never had a problem with it again.
