UPDATE on banging noise
Ok I found out where the noise is coming from. I dont know what you call that part but it is the top left fan-look-like part that the engine belt is wrapped around. There is something bouncing inside of it and it only makes the noise when i rev the engine. Part of it came out last night and hit in the face but theres another piece inside.
any ideas?
thanks for the help

Something came out of it and hit you in the face?
Be careful man, it will hard to drive your thirdgen when you are blind.
I cant picture what you are referring to though? Just watch those eyes.

Top left when looking at the engine I assume?? That would be the alternator.
Yea, having stuff fly from it, and hit you is not good. That part going bad will render you SCREWED and you will be going no where.

I was going to say AC compressor, i think mine is on the left/facing the engine.
I cant imagine what would fly out of that though, unless the clutch flew off and hit him,
oops, it would be the alt. sorry, i was backwards.

ITs on the top left side and its light grey with black blades. I tried it again today and it wont do it unless i rev the car enough, i saw a flake looking thing through the holes behind. Any ideas yet?
thanks again

On my 89 V6 RS the alternator is doing this, except it's not trying to blind me. I'm hearing a tapping sound coming from it, and when there's heavier electrical load the belt just before it flaps. Is it going to completely fail on me soon? Because that would stink when I'm 70 miles from home in the middle of nowhere Mississippi and my cell phone isn't getting service. I'm taking the car to my mechanic but he can't look at it until a couple of weeks from now. I'd like to think it'll last me the 600 miles I'm going to drive the car between now and then. Once I was driving my Blazer and the alternator failed and the battery died and I was almost stuck. Luckily I had a spare battery and a socket set in the back...

Alternator and belt is faily easy thing to do on these cars with some hand tools and brains (safety issues mainly, your dealing with electricty).
Guy with flapping belt, your could be more then just the alt bad. But if its not wanting to spin with rest of car, that would cause flapping belt. Or, belt is stretched, or tensioner is not working.

OK I found a rebuilt alternator at Advance auto parts for $65 so I'm gonna get that. Could I have killed it from having a car audio amp, radar detector, and alarm hooked up? What's involved in replacing the alternator? I should be able to do it from looking at my Haynes manual.

its really easy, basic hand tools.
KEY THING!!! DX the battery before you do ANYTHING!!!
Pull belt off
unplug the wire clip in top of alt
undo wire on back of alt
Undo the bolts holding bracket in (3-5 bolts/nuts I belive)
Pull it out, and throw it like a shot put!
Install new reverse of above, minus the throwing
