you bet it would. When my first coil died, I tried to figure out what the hell the problem was because if I got on real hard, then it stumbled and farted and backfired, but if I went soft, it was ok. Also idled just fine.

it doesnt matter if i feather the throttle or mash it. it wont go at all, then suddenly, its fine. i have had MAF problems i think, i unplugged it and the problem was still there, but other problems cleared up. i was thinking possible TPS. i know those three are my possibilities. any others you can think of?

MAF, TPS, plugs, wires, cap, rotor, coil. You can check all of these yourself if you have a digital voltmeter. There is a procedure for all of these in the haynes manual for everything but the MAF.
To test the MAF(unscientific approach): idle the motor and tap on the MAF, if the motor stumbles, it's bad.
Testing the MAF(scientfic approach):

Check them all, even if you think that it's ok. I had a problem with bogging a couple of weeks ago and finally tracked it down to the wires...which were only about a month old. Turns out that one of them was getting "heat soaked" from the exhaust leak that I had at the manifold and when it heated up, i got high resistance in it and it misfired, causing my bogging problem. Moral of the story: Everything is suspect until you've found the culprit.
You're problem sounds like an ignition prblem, so that's where I would start.

i was working on it this morning, and it got progressively worse until it wouldnt even run anymore. it isnt throwing any codes at all and i had it hooked up to the TECH 1. everything was reading normal, the lil bit that it monitors anyways. i replaced the coil and it runs now, but still wont run for a damn. im not going to be anywhere near it for about a week now, im back at school. i also looked at the cap and rotor, good. the TPS is working just fine too. the only odd thing i did notice, was at times, and just for a second, the injector pulse width would drop to 0 and then back to normal. it did that a couple times. maybe that helps.

same problem
I have the same problem but it eventually got worse. I put a MSD 6A box and a Blaster 2 coil so i dont think its the coil. bot new spark plugs/wires in also.
sounds like the problem is coming from your leaking injectors. I'm thinking that when you come to a stop and let it idle, gas starts pooling up. When you give it gas, it stumbles, then backfires, getting rid of all the excess gas it pooled up while idling. After that, it comes to life, yet still burns rich. I've got a set of injectors from an '89 RS 2.8, just let me know if you're interested.
