4th gen shifter in 3rd gen?
To all you thirdgen 5 speeds (the few there are).....has anybody ever put a 4th gen shifter into a 3rd gen? I know it's possible....but has anyone done it? My friend has one he isn't using and i'm gonna put it in mine. It's gotta be shorter than the stock 3rd gen shifter.
Thanks

well, i did it this weekend and in fact, it is shorter......not in height....but the shifts are a little shorter. I guess it's now a factory short throw shifter. For free, it's not a bad deal....however i still want a pro 5.0 shifter

I got a good shifter that came with my trans but it was cut of right at the bottom lock nut. I was in the shed last night playing with it griped in the vise thinking I could experiment and make different handles.
From the pico f the 5.0 shifter it look as hey are much straighter, shorter.
stock one has a lazy bend toward the driver about 3 inches up. and these seam to lean to wards the driver a tad but are straight and short.
Course I could use it to make a 50's retro shifter that needs a hole cut in the roof just to shift it.

I figure the boot with cover most to half of the chrome piece. This was a shifter I got with my trans, it had been cut clean off where the stock two piece one went together.
Still has / uses the stock bend in the bar towards the drive and I added on about a piece of 4 inch pipe. Cutoff a piece of chrome pipe to cover the weld and finish it off clean. The handle is a side grip for a drill I never used. Cut the bolt off the top flat and ever.
I had it in the vise jerking it around through the gears. Feels solid.
Of course it could end up working like crap, but I had some free time and threw something together.
But it feels real comfy and solid.

OK so it ended up worse than it looks. I was using it back wards and that really matters. The bend goes towards the passenger seat cause the T5 is twisted to the left. So that screwed everything up right there and it was about 2 inches to short if I kept using the center console.
Ill hack if off and try again, this time with it mounted in the vise the right way around.

Ok how abou the short throw mustang T5 base
item=2446161014 $40
And the T56 short throw top piece
item=2445816022 $30
-----------------

Drops the price to around $80-$90 for a new shifter.
the T5 base is the same it just has the never attachment points that could let you use any top piece.

Yeah, but you're still dealing with that rubbery 'feel'. Play with a stock shifter, then a good aftermarket shifter, and it's night and day.
For the extra $$, you also get positive stops (easily built, tho) but what about the 2-3 spring loaded shift assist?

Head over to the trans section for the pics, but man did my retro shifter work out sweet as heck. Its actually a short throw shifter also. 1-2 is about half the distance as it was before.

OK, so I cut the money sign off and finished my pro 5.0 clone. it helped though using the funky shifter for a while. I got the shape and size right this time around.
3rd times a charm.
Course it still the stock base,
no shift stops but cheap cheap cheap.

If budget will allow, I agree with Doward, go after market. My B&M is one of the best mods I've done. See sig.

A B&M short throw has been on my list for a while. But they're so expensive. Maybe for my birthday...
edit: FYI the B&M short throw is listed on Summit for '83-2000 Camaro/Firebird T5. The Hurst Billet Plus shifter is the one I had my eye on.
