beetle vs 3rd gen v6

A friend who has a 71 volkswagen beetle (stock) what me to race him with my 89 bird, he says he can beat me. The winner takes 100 bucks.

Do U think this is easy money?

Funny thing about the old VW's they don't make much power but some how get lots of speed out of them. Why you can take a stock bettle and add a 1000lb rool cage n some big tires and even a stock egnine will haul butt at the dunes.

I would question it to as it may just be a setup.

As far as I've been able to tell, if that is indeed stock, which highly doubt it is, it has probably around 50 hp. I realize that they are light and have awesome weight distribution, but I highly doubt that is enough to make up for 80 horses.

If he isn't stock though you're gonna get owned.
I'd bet he is setting you up.

No, I dont think it is a setup because I know that beetle it is used as a delivery car.
My friend wants to race me because he is a beetle fan , he thinks beetles are the best cars ever made.

I heard that beetles make 18 sec on 0-60 and 21 secs on the 1/4 mile, but I don't really know if this is true

I rebuilt a VW motor on time. I took it from a 1600cc motor to a 1776cc and bumped the compression all the way up to 12.5:1, it will not take pump gas. Puts out about 180hp, 170ft/lbs tq. (engine dyno once, cant find the print out). Has dual carbs/intake. Man that thing flys. I have it my Sand Rail. Pulls the front tires up on the street. I had to get a High Torque starter for it because the stock unit wouldn't turn it past the compression stoke to get it started. Lots of work and money into this motor...more than my Camaro. Be VERY carful about these things. I know people that run 10.5:1 compression with pump gas...very streetable. Plus, it's in a fairly light car. 1 person can lift the front of a beetle by themselves if they tried. Plus the beauty of motors like this are that all of the chages are internal with little or no cam changes, so they look/act totally stock until you hit the gas, then you better hang on.

I've seen a stock beetle make an 18 sec pass full out. It was an extremely popilar couriosity at the track, it being still stock.

That stock 1600cc dual port may put out 50 hp on a good day and will do a mid to high 19.

My mild 1776 bug did a best of 15.58 in the quarter and 9.54 1/8th.

And something Doward might like, my friend has a junkyard Garret T3 turbo on a 1776 in a mid engine sand rail, he built a plenum to draw through a 600 Holley on the inlet side, he runs 7.49 @ 94 in the 1/8, scared to take it in the 1/4.
