ok easy enough. do good ole tom p's tune-up. change the muffler out to a higher flow or just put a glass pack in it's place. then go to the junk yard and get the dual filter air cleaner unless it already has it and just cut off the bottoms.....remember though leave enough so that the filters will stay in place. just start there.and if you go all the best lookin roughly 300 to 400 dollars and that accel or msd on ignition and accel or k/n for the air.

dont get a glasspack. flows worth ****. i hear dynomax makes good mufflers (cat back cost about $170) tom p tune up dont cut out the bottems of your intake. its flows very good now and u dont want it to be getting water in it. might wanna get a better coil. from what i hear a ignition for these cars isnt worth it. have fun with the car. watch out for the civics. they have a good chance against beating u

welcome to the boards

Tomp tune up is always the first place to start. Search here and you will find it.

Dynomax cat back is prefured, but depends on your cash flow. Exhaust is deff something to look into.

Coil is good place also, msd is preffured.

The dual snorkle intake inwhich I belive you should have, has been tested by a board member, and found to be very efficent with clean filters. Dont cut bottom out, that didnt gain him (same test person) anything. Just remove the deflectors in it.

That should get you going for a little while, then come back and we can assisit you futher.

I ment the glasspack from dyno. and how do you figure they don't flow? it's a straight through pipe with a few baffles to let air into the glass section so it barks on decel. But hey to each his own I guess.

about ignition I myself am gonna run an accel/malory ignition because they even sell a hipro distributor for our car. and yes ignition doesn't add all of alot of hp BUT it does add to gas milage and increase's your rpm range. but here's the trick increase your air intake and exhuast output, up the fuel flow and the spark is increased from the hipro ignition you see a bigger increase in power in compareson to what it would be with a stock ignition.....

i had put one on a blazer i had with a 2.8 in it. and it definally lost power. even the guy at the muffler shop told me it feels like it lost some of the little amount of power it had. since then ive always gone with actual mufflers. i have a magnaflow one my 94 v6 camaro and it sounds horrible. buzzes real bad.

My only warning about the Flow on a six is....it sounds raspy. Very raspy. It screams 'american ****'. But hey, your car, your call.

I CAN say I had the Dynomax system and was impressed. Although it wasn't loud enough for me (because I had a cat, and my definition of loud is a little skewered. My car shakes peoples' houses right now but I dont think it's loud enough)... But the tone of it is very deep. It sounds as ballsy or ballsier than a 305 with stock exhaust. I know, I test drove one.

You want power on a budget...well that's a little trickier but I can give you some easy stuff to do for smoother operation and a more enjoyable ride.

As everyone mentions, do the TomP tuneup..it really is worthwhile and it covers a hell of a lot. Now I'm not sure how much Tom covered, but I'll add in if he didn't already:

Remove your IAC valve (located on the pass. side, or back of your throttle...depending on year. It's a cylindrical looking thing with a sensor connection, and it's probably held in by two Torx bit screws. Disconnect it, remove the screws, and remove the IAC valve carefully. Watch out, it has an O-ring holding it in. If you lose that, you'll need to buy a new one. Now keep any fluids or cleaners away from the motor assembly (the metal back part, with the little needle valve on it and sensor connection)...but the rest of the valve assembly, clean the holy hell out of with throttle body cleaner. Clean the passages and recesses in the throttle that the IAC goes into as well.

Clean your throttle body with that TB cleaner while you're at it. You'd be amazed the difference in operation just these two things will make.

I call those two part of my 'signature 5 minute tuneup'.

Flow

Hello,
I have a 91 camaro with turbo thrushers and it has great airflow. So that might be an avenue you could think about. It puts out alot of noise. Also you could try to clear out your cat conv. It may be illegal but it will supply better airflow and better sound.

Me too

I just picked up an 86 2.8 the other day as well and have been wondering how to punch out a couple more hps instead of doing a full engine swap

Tune up isa good idea. Don't forget headers. Pacesetter make a pair for our cars. Dynomax exhaust is good. Look on summit racing. They have lots of stuff for our cars.

the only true way to gain some more hp, is to upgrade to the 3.4L V6 out of the 4th gens, unless you want to turbo, i looked very hard into suping up the 2.8L.
