I know that I am going to sound like a jacka$$ asking this, but here goes anyways. Do we have a one wire or three wire alternator on our cars? Also, is it the 12-SI or the 10-SI alternator or what model is it? I have an 85 2.8 if it matters. Would it be better to get a 12-SI type if I have a 10-SI?

which wire are you refering to? there's one "hot" wire but then there is the plug, i don't remember how many it has. i don't know about the different model numbers.
