Is it totally necessary to ? ...

Is it totally necessary to use a torq wrench on the bolts on the waterpump when replacing it with a new one ?

This is on my new 98 ... Im assuming it would pretty much be the same as on the 2.8 , well not the exact pump but whether I need to use a torque wrench or not .

Thanx guys !

if you have a torque wrench its always nice to use it so you can rule torquing out of any problems you might have(like leaking). but, you will most likely be fine doing it by ear.

The only things i use a torque wrench for are heads, rocker studs, intake. I belive (I just woke up) the rest I just do by hand.

Agreed; if there's a torque spec, there's a reason for it. Don't forget, it can hurt just as much to be "too tight" as it could be if a bolt was "too loose". You don't want to get a weird random torque spec going on the water pump; it might be possible for it to either warp, or, not seat the gasket properly.

Also, tighten the bolts to spec in a criss-cross pattern; work your way up to final torque in 2 or three stages.

Remember the bolt that's sticking out the furthest on the passenger side of the water pump also goes through a water jacket; put some blue RTV or teflon sealant on the bolt's threads.

Thanx guys !

On my waterpump on my old camaro I got 175k miles off the original pump !

On this car , only 70 !!

Guess they dont make things like they use to anymore huh guys ?

I just checked out a pump at advance , one of those lifetime warranty ones for $50.00 , that seems too cheap for a waterpump .....what you guys think ?

How have you been Dale and TomP ?...long time no see !

Yup, the statue of liberty holds a torque wrench and a Haynes manual. I warped my old intake being an idiot not going out to spend 75 bux for a torque wrench so I ended up paying 50 for a new intake plus the torque wrench.
WaynesRS what kind of car do you need the water pump for?

Any recent radiator hoses been loosened/replaced?
I have ever so slight leak from radiator.
It only happens as car cools overnight & then the warm morning air causes a slight leak somewhere in the radiator area. I'd do a pressure test, yet, I only add water once a month or so. I'm not into bursting open a plastic sided radiator tank that holds water 99% rest of time.

No hoses have been replaced , But it could be just like you said , I could have a "ever so slight leak " from radiator or hose . Im just ganna watch it . I wonder if the pressure from the ac just causes it to leak you know . I'm just ganna watch it .

Thanx Karl
