Intake design is interesting to say the least. Making the runners bigger around tends to move the torque peak higher in the RPM band. Lengthening the runners causes the opposite. In other words, short runners = high RPM torque, long runners= low rpm torque. Fat runners=high rpm torque, skinny runners=low rpm torque. The speed at which the air is able to flow is greater with a smaller opening (hence the garden hose thing mentioned above). Just realized I made this a new thread.....Now I feel more ignorant than normal....

To continue with the explanation in regards to the length since the diameter has been explained...the length effects the low and high end due to the pressure reflections and when the pressure waves hit the intake valves.

Notice how certain 4 cylinders are getting longer intake runners now? Ever seen the runners on a new, I think, Toyota? Equal-length tubes branching off from a 'collector' right past the throttlebody. Looks so much like a header it's scary.

And they tend to be pretty long

On import cars, the motors make power so hihg in the band, they HAVE to put super long runners in to make torque low enough to be useful...

Exactly. They're finally getting smart. And with how EVERYTHING seems to be getting VTEC, or variants like VVT, etc.....some of these 4 cyls are really starting to become contenders, as scary as that thought is.

Let's not forget the variable intake runner setups on some cars... in combination with variable valvetrain technology, it's just kinda scary.. hopefully the Global 60* should include most of these technological milestones.

From what I've heard, it will! At least in some capacity.

Makes me want

to go build a custom set of heads and an intake with variable runners to match it to.........hmmmmm. I think that'll be my NEXT project (the heads will have to wait though)

How about you go and build yourself a CVT with scotch tape, assorted size metal drums, and rubberbands?

How do you plan on doing the intake?

Havn't decided yet

Although:

OR

The TPI hybrid intake seen before, (don't have the link). Both yielded decent gains, although the G-tch results are questionable. I've seen a few custom intakes made for the 60* V6. I've been educating myself on intake design. The jury is still out, needless to say.

It's hard to believe a slapped-together intake yielded a gain that massive..... I have a feeling the G-Tech was out of calibration. 40 hp from an intake? A lot of V8's cant even get a gain like that. And not to mention the intake hasn't even been 'tuned' so to speak...
