I wonder what the police checks when they arrest you only because you have an "old" car? Lights, hand brake and what else? It's inpection time here in Canada so that's why I wonder. Thanks in advance!

horn, turn signals, I seen a cops in Canada and they were busting **** cars for performance parts. One guy got slammed for a racing fuel cell that is 1000 times safer than stock in a crash.

tires for proper depth. exhaust if its loud. roaches in the ash tray.
guns under your seat. Mexicans under your hood. moon shine in your gas tank.

best one I ever heard of was cops at traffic lights smelling exhaust fumes in London. Why? People found out that 50% cooking oil and 50% diesel ran just fine and was super cheap. But they were avoiding gas tax so they had special cops to sniff exhaust fumes as the cooking oil cars smelled good. Then bust them. Anything you put in your tank is taxable. You could actualy get busted for using fuel addtives as your avoid fuel tax.

I know people who have run used cooking oil too. Just about anything will fire off in a diesel. Save them stridex pads.

The old state inspection we had here, that they did away with because of the "hassle" was..

All lights functioning
horn works
ebrake works
proper seatbelts
tread depth on tires
shocks
excesive smoke from exhaust
no cracks in windows that would obstruct view
wipers work
tint not to dark.

I really wish they would go back to this.

So I have a couple of things to get fixed... My horn is working but sounds horrible. Turn signals all works, the only thing that don't works right is the reverse lights... Sometimes they works, sometimes not... Wonder what's going on. My hand brake works but not that much, tried to make someone adjust it and it didn't help a lot. My exhaust is rusted just before the muffler and some smoke is coming from there, will get that fixed tomorow. My windows are tintend on the sides, illegal here but haven't been arested one time for that so this will stay like this.

Not sure if reverse lights have to work. a license plate light comes to mind though. cops usually save that one for when they want to know what your doing. Then say "hey, your license plate light is out."

I think the best way to find out, it to ask someone who actually knows exactly what needs to be checked out; ie: someone who works for the place where the inspections are done.
Everyone so far has given good advice, but they may not know the specifics of what it takes to pass inspection in your area.
