New to 2.8, Legion of problems

I just bought an '87 Firebird for an absolute steal (300) but I got what I paid for - it runs crummy. The fact it has been neglected for six years doens't help. I'm looking to do the TomP tuneup shortly, the engine runs super-rough when (gee, got no tachometer, so I'm guessing) idling and up to around 3500 or so RPM, then it manages to get some oomph and moves okay. It has a Legion of other problems, but the engine is my primary focus right now, oh, and the pesky headlight switch that doesn't work...

..I'm sure a LHO swap would cure the engine troubles, but I want to keep costs nice and low - the GTA is gettting the lion's share of the funding and ALL of the go-fast goodies. The Firebird is simply a go-to-work car.

If I found a good 3.4 for REAL cheap and a buddy to install it, I'd be down for it. However, I doubt I can get both of those to happen - and I'm not really looking to fully restore the car, just get it into reliable transportation. I've got some ideas for some bumper stickers... "This is NOT an abandoned car!" I'll post some pics for my sig.
