timing chain install/valve lash adj

hey i was reading on a timing chain install...well currently i have both heads off the car because i have to have some exhaust manifold bolts drilled out and need new valve seals...but since that was out i figured a new timing chaing as its the original and the motor has 158 k on it...so when aligning the marks they should be aligned as where the cam mark is facing down and the crank mark is facing up...figured i would ask that...and setting valve lash when reinstalling the heads...i have a service manual that states how to do it...is that good or are there any other tricks...thanx guyz...feels good to be back here...haven't worked on teh bird in a while since i picked up an 88 lincoln mark 7 lsc...i know its a ford...but luxury is nice...

Valve lash: Get a compression gauge. Crank down on the rocker nuts until you have no lash (up/down movement) of the pushrods between the rocker and the lifter. Take a compression reading here. Cylinder pressure should be within about 30 PSI of 150 PSI. Adjust the nuts slightly then take another reading. Shoot for max compression in each cylinder. Its the easiest way I know...

Service manuals give a good starting point, but each engine tends to be different due to wear in the valvetrain, and this is best because then you know you haven't screwed anything up.
