V6 Ignition

There should really be two websites for this stuff...a V6 Website and a V8 so you can have all the v6 exhaust, ignition, suspension and computer stuff seperated but whatever, onto the questions.

I was looking in a MSD catalog I lied to the company to get since they won't send them to regular people, only stores and I noticed that they make a distributor for a 90degree straight fire or odd fire chevy V6. Would this work on our engines or no? It says you need the MSD 6a box for it but if your looking to go aftermarket distributor you probably got a 6A box or want one.

No, MSD (or anyone else) does not produce an aftermarket distributor for the 60 degree V6.

As to the multiple boards, no to that, either. Sans the distributor, the ignition components are identical. The computers are virtually identical. The suspension (save the front coil spings) is absolutely identical. The V6 guys who have a catback have a V8 catback, becuase noone produces a V6 specific catback. The key differences between the V6 and V8 cars is the V6 or the V8, and to some degree the transmission. Beyond that, discretion is pointless.

Get one of these, but from from MSD and get a 4.3L cap and rotor and use it in your car.
They use this for 2.8, 3.1 and 4.3L even fire engines.

Isn't that applicability chart just for the cap/rotor? I don't think the whole distributor is a cross part.

i like the fact of having one site the way its done, that way i can look at all the stuff going on at once and compare.

That's just cap and rotor.
When I go back state side I'll get a 4.3 dis and compair it to my 2.8 unit.
The 2.8 and 4.3 share the same ICM, the 4.3 distributor might be longer or shorter or have a bigger or smaller hole for it.

Mallory does.
It is not computer compatable however. Carburation or efi with mechanical advance.

To the question.

A computer controlled 2.8 or 3.1 does not need any extra help precision wise when talking the external coil hei. In stock form it is fully capable of running well with high performance build ups. Just remember a few things.

Keep your plug gaps adequte for use , add multiple spark capability , and increase voltage capabilities with a sound coil , wires, battery, cables, grounds, and alternator.

On the contrary a blueprinted dynoed distributor from a distributor shop will be extra insurance in a really fit engine build.
When thinking electric system, put precision and support, before the terms of thought that want to belive all parts are created soley for horsepower increase.

Once you can free yourself from real and false advertisements you will always see a product for what it is and what it does. Msd and Mallory both are genuine in their advertisements, an exaple of advertisements that are false are electric superchargers and many intake/exhaust gadget claims.

On a personal note, I run a stock small cap hei , MSD blaster coil , Taylor spiro pro wire, delco plugs, Optima battery , new delco alternator , and a MSD 6al box.

All of this is controlled by laptop through the commander 950 and I set the advance to what ever it needs to be.

And no a 4.3 distributor will not work. Height is of concern , and the 2.8 uses a hex oil drive

If you ask this guy nice and have money to spend. He can build just abut anything if you ask. Especially if there is no other choice out there he may be willing to start making them.

If he will make it. It will be better than any mass produced in Mexico name brand product summit sells.
