if swapping to carb...
i've got the whole edelbrock carb setup and a holley 4 bbl carb, as well as vacuum adv. distributor. i know i'll need cowl hood for clearnace and a fuel pressure regulator with a return line ( to avoid droping tank again). what about my speedometer and VATS? what can i/will i need to do here?

Good question. I would think your speedo would still work. Mine doesnt but i went from a 85 2.8 to a much newer v8. My car had a cable driven speedo, the new trans is vss. Your just doing an induction swap. As long as you dont go wire cuttin crazy i would think you'd be ok.
Project mentioned something about a vats bypass module or something like that to me when i was doing the swap but i didnt use any of the v8 tpi stuff. Instead i went right to carb (3 wires woohoo!!!)
Anyone else know for sure?

Curious
Why ya swapping to carb? If the tranny is VSS, you should be able to get a reading from the sensor itself with an aftermarket gauge. Let me know how it goes.

If your speedo is cable driven and the ecm is not in use/installed, the vss will not work but the speedometer will work anyway. It is just like plugging an air rail for a smog pump system but it is still on the car.

As long as it's powered, the VSS should still drive the speedometer... I'm not sure if the VSS gets its power from the ECM or not, but I'm fairly certain the signal goes from the sender to the speedo, and then to the ECM... so the ECM is not key to the speedometer's function
For VSS, you'd need to either remove the VSS system, or leave the ECM in, or find an aftermarket solution.

FBOD, i'm wanting to swap to carb to see if i can get more power out of my setup. i think i might be able to get it solidly into the 14s with a carb on it.
techsmurf, i hope you're right. i hope the sensor sends the signal to the speedo then to the ecm, that'll be fine. and, what do you mean by the last part of your post, "For VSS, you'd need to either remove the VSS system, or leave the ECM in, or find an aftermarket solution"? are you refering to VATS but accidentily typed VSS? if not, please explain.
anyone able to tell me what i need to do about VATS?

Alan, no need to worry about the speedo. As long as the VSS is in the trans plugged in and the little white box (some call it a DRAC, what ever that means, some call it a speedometer signal buffer) is connected under the dash it will work. My S10 has no ECM and the speedo works fine. The temp gauge and gas guage were messed up when it had the awesome 2.5 in it.
