Firebird for Sale..should i...

ive always wanted an F-Body...

and my friend and me were gonna trade my truck for his firebird, parents said no, cuz he only paid $600 for the bird and we paid $1400 for the truck and another $300-400 to get it running good.

well...the firebird is a 91 3.1 v6 auto...t-tops(don't leak)

the door hinges aren't in the best shape, the trunk/hatch doesnt go down all the way...it has no trunk lock.

the headlights don't come up and the driver window motor doesn't work.

how much would u pay for the car? the paint is red, the ground effects are torn up, the paint is peeling/cracking and faded...

im gonna offer himm 400 and see what he says, but he paid 600 for it, so i dunno. all he did was drive it from the guys house to his, and than to-from work once.

what do u think?

By the looks of your signature file, you've already decided.

I had the 3.1 liter engine in an Oldsmobile Cutlass and was satisfied with the performance and the maintenance requirements. Then again, I bought it new and took care of it.

What kind of mileage is on this car? Has it been taken care of?

I'm betting that for 400-600 clams it going to be on the low end of "good" condition or even right at "poor".

Either way, there are liekly to be plenty of projects associated with this car to keep you reading here a lot.

Welcome to the forum.

I paid 300 for a running 2.8 '87 Firebird, not in the best cosmetic shape, and the driver's door couldn't lock. The engine was sort of rough idling, and the tranny had a few glitches, but it seemed reliable enough, only lacking power. I'm ripping out the interior and re-doing it right now, might be selling it as a project car to a guy I know.

Your proposed car? Four hundred sounds fair, if a bit generous, considering the glitches it seems to have. A headlight control module (if it needs to be replaced) can run something like two hundred bucks new, but you may be able to find one used at a junk yard. I need one myself, as only one side goes up and down. Sounds like the trunk pull-down mechanism (if the'91's all had them) is broken too, that can cost some money to fix, especially considering it has no lock. I don't know how much a window motor can cost, if that's the true culprit, it could be a simple switch problem or a break in the wiring.

Like Cadillac already said, you could probably find a better vehicle for a good price, unless you just want it as a parts car or something. You could probably find a V8 Firebird (go for a Formula, they're super smurfy) for under 1500 if you look long enough, that still works great and is in halfway decent shape.

I wouldn't trade the truck for it, no. Trucks hold their value by far better than F-bodies, as noted by what you paid for yours and what people note they've pair for their F-bodies.

For the headlights, it might be cheaper than you think! GM redesigned the headlight motors in '87, and there's a common point of failure- a set of plastic bushings that snap. One of thirdgen.org's sponsors, "TDS" (top right of this page), sells a headlight repair kit- here's the link to it: http://www.top-downsolutions.com/pro...products_id=87

But your other choice sounds good too! Can't beat a V8! But, one thing- how's the body on the '91 Firebird? Good shape? Personally, I'd rather do engine work than bodywork. And if the Camaro's primer gray, be sure there's no rust underneath that primer. Spray-can-primers are NOT waterproof; they absorb water, and can cause the metal underneath to rust. You don't want a rustbucket, trust me- I've got one.
