Big Problem: Injectors
Hey, I'm new to the site, and I have a pretty big issue on my hands.
I have a 1986, 2.8L camaro that I bought in June (paid $1000, put $1000 into it since). I got it diagonsed about july with "bad injectors" because when we set my timing, it was popping out the intake. The mechanic sprayed some lubricant stuff in the intake and it didn't pop, so he said it was that.
Ok, so about a month ago, I bougt Accell performance injectors from jegs.com. They are level 3 injectors at 19 lbs./hr. opposed to stock (around 15). A friend and I put the injectors in about 2 weeks ago, and the car was running very rough. I drove it around for 2 days until I could get a chance to fix the timing. (I forgot to mention my timing was WAY off because we had to advnace it to compensate for the bad injectors) Ok, so 2 days later, I got the distributor wrench (freakin 15mm) and decided to time it myself. BAD IDEA. While i was adjusting the distributor, the engine flooded and it hasn't started since. I took it to a mechanic down the street from where I was, and they worked on it for 5 hours and couldn't find out what's going on. The guy said my exhaust could be plugged, but when he did a test (pressure gauge in the O2 sensor) he didn't come up with anything. apperently, but #1 cylinder isn't getting any fuel to it at all and the other 5 are flooding quickly. I'm not sure what's going on, but when i took the plugs out and cleaned them, the engine started, had a REALLY bad miss, and flooded again in a matter of about 10 seconds. If this sounds familiar, or you could help out, that'd be GREAT. I would love to start driving my camaro again cause i'm stuck with my mom's honda until then. Thanks!
also, the service engine soon light has been on since I got it, ran a scan and it said I had a faulty MAF sensor, went and replaced that, but haven't noticed a change yet (haven't driven it).

The other part is that , unless you have done some major reworking to the motor, 19lb injectors are far too big for our tiny 2.8s. Chances are that is part of the reason the car is flooding so quickly... Too much gas getting down there with no place to go.
I'm also thinking that aside from the timing and injector mis-sizing, you may have a leak (air) around the manifold and/or plenum. Did you replace the gaskets when you did the injectors?
Hope this helps

I agree, you're not going to be able to solve any other problems until you put the proper injectors in there and do a proper installation (make sure all the gaskets/o-rings are done properly).

Hi,
Check my post about 19lbs. injectors for 2.8s:

Yes, we replaced all the gaskets on the intake manifold and the plenum. I was under the impression that the injectors would just allow more fuel so the engine would run better. My presumption now is to put the old injectors in and somehow refund the current ones, and then I'll just save up for stock injectors. Any other ideas what I could do with the 19's?

I don't remember the link but there's a guy you can send your injecters to and for $70 he cleans and flow matches them...something like that. I'd send the stock ones to him, he'll tell you if 1 of them is wrecked and everyone says he's a great guy. You'll have'em back pretty quick. I'd do that, then pull the 19lb injecters and refund them if possible, if not ebay'em and take a loss. I think I read the stock ones were 16lb or something around there, I think less so 19lb is def too much.
You can run any injector you want - Even 30#, so long as you adjust the injector constant and PW in the programming.
For a stock program, 19# is going to be too much fuel, but it should still run. Have you tried measuring the voltage at the injector harness? You might also check the injector resistances themselves. If the resistances are too low, you might be killing an output driver in the ECM, causing full fuel flow 100% of the time.
If you find low coil resistances, try disconnecting the offenders to run the engine.
BTW - Were you perhaps thinking of www.cruzinperformance.com ?

Going off of THIS chart, it's looks like the new injectors you have would go nice w/ a modified 3.4
