Will this hurt?

My car has had a broken tranny mount for a while now. Its a WC-t5 and the mount is 300 to fix. I don;t knwo how bad it is, if i get under the car the tranny moves up and down, not to much. Sometimes when i shift into second or third it shakes the car back in forth until i floor. But its not bad when driving really, is this bad thing to be driving on? Thanks guys

$300???

By a shop???

For $300 you should be able to buy a big floor jack and stands, plus the parts and have some money left over.

A big floor jack is a must for any under car jobs. Then little ones never go high enough.

Yeah you don't need that $300 piece of garbage.

1. Buy regular-style poly mount from Summit for $20
2. Hit a junkyard and get a crossmember from an automatic tranny'd car, preferably 84-86.

Keep in mind the V8 guys use the regular-style poly mount. I don't know why GM went apesht about giving the V6 guys a fluid filled mount!

(I say preferably 84-86 because in either 87 or 88, GM redesigned the crossmember a little. 87 or 88 and up has the trans mount bolting to a flat bar and then bolting to the crossmember. But 84-86 just has the trans mount bolting directly to the crossmember.)

My buddy bought a nice little AC/Delco set, came with 2 jackstands and a hydraulic jack. He had a Mazda Navaho, which was basically a Ford Explorer. Well, the little hydraulic jack wasn't high enough to touch the frame of the SUV! We were laughing so hard about that. He had to use the spare tire jack, one side of the truck at a time, to lift the truck up and slide a jackstand underneath. What a pain- but really funny! The jackstands were sweet, but the hydraulic jack was just pathetic.

Thanks guys

TomP, does it matter that my car is an 88? Why would i get a 84-86 one? Just confused on that. It will bolt right up? and how will the poly mount match up? Thanks again

The other question being, is this hurting anything the way it is? Thanks again

So my 87 bird has this stupid fluid filled mount? Can the poly one be mounted to the stock cross bar?

87-and-up (or 88-and-up, I forget which) have a two-part crossmember.

Okay... let me draw and attach a picture.

Basically the 84-86 mount will have a center bolt hole in the crossmember. The auto trans mount will bolt right to the crossmember.

"I was told" that GM redesigned the crossmember because the V8 guys were stressing out that center bolt hole and causing it to crack out of the center of the crossmember!

So the redesigned 87-up (or 88-up) crossmember will have a huge oval in the center of the crossmember that you can't bolt the mount to. That's why you need the secondary mount.

Either one works, though.

Basically it comes down to Yes, the mount will work either way. The earlier style x-member is easiest. When you're in th e junkyard you should be able to see what you'll need.

Yeah, just get teh automatic flat bar one - you'll mount it a little farther back, but with the automatic tranny mount, bolts right up. Easy as hell, I did it in about 15 minutes (air tools)

Hey Doward, you've got an 88? Which kind of crossmember did you have originally? Was it the second one in that drawing of mine?
