so where'd my second gear go....

just thought i'd inform everyone that on my drive back from kansas city (seeing my girlfriend) to my college (45-50 miles away) i pulled to a traffic light and started to go, reved up fine, then something happened, it reved higher, and higher, so i got off, going , uh oh, it's gone....tried again, no luck. Drove around town trying anything i could think to get it to shift into second, nada, reved it up higher in 1st hoping second might engage, (uh-uh) put it in second, then first, hoping for the upped line pressure might gimmie a lil' something, but nada.....no luck, had AAA tow it back to my college town, and tomorrow i'll call the tranny shop to get a verdict.

If it's a full rebuild, and the price is high, i might have to grab one of the 4L60E's from my yard back home for 100 bux, and have them throw that in...good news if that's the case, is that i won't have to worry about my 4th gen speedo not working anymore, but the tradeoff is a tad much. Neway, this is also the first itme my car is broke, and i'm not umm, afraid .... guess i grew up in the past few years...

yeh, i'm guessing it's not. The transmission is off one rebuild already 3 years ago, if i could get by w/o rebuilding it again i would, which is also why i wouldn't mind getting the 4th gne automatic and going that route...we'll see,

anyone have any ideas on differences between a 4l60e and the standard 700r4 that're gonna cause me some problems?

thanks for the referral kretos

Also, what yr are the trannies? In 98, the yr of my new one, gm switched to a 1 piece bell housing, so the dust sheild just goes across the bottom front of the bell housing. THis will make putting those types tranny's in a lot more interesting/curse fest than should be right in a third gen( on jacks).

yeh, that bellhousing change would make things interesting, but the ones i'm looking at are earlier, 93-95 units from the 3.4's.

good news

just got my car back from the transmission shop today, plastic governer gear in the 700r4 had stripped (who puts plastic gears in cars anyway?) well, the gear won't allow the car to go into second if it's not working, so, guess what happened. Car's fixed and works fine now, total budget hit was $111.04, not to bad, and a helluva lot better than another rebuild.

GOOD FOR YOUR BUDGET!
Tomorrow I start TRANSFORMATION in my 1985 Firebird.
A freshly rebuilt 1990 700R4 (THANK YOU CALICAMARO)
goes in.
Pictures to come.
Pray to bell ringer up there that this is last one.
Kinda sucks to tell Wife that yep I just did a tranny in that car. 2-3 years ago....
Ya know that makes her MiniVan a bit closer....IN HER MIND!
