Having Engine cuts off while stuck in traffic

My car will shut off while I am rolling at 10 mph or less in traffic, she kinds off lets you know by shuttering a little bit (sometimes); so what I do is; if I have enough room to move in the slow traffic, I will give her a little gas, I kind of have to play a timing game with her when stuck in traffic; I let a little space get between me and the car in front(hopefully no one jumps in front of me) and then I put my foot on the gas to keep her moving a little bit. she does not overheat. She has no problem restarting.

Oh, BTW - she has no problems while waiting for lights to change; it seems as though it happens while driving on the highway/high speeds the having to stop and slow down for a traffic jam.

Here is info on car: '90 Firebird V6 3.1 bought in 10/04. Wires, plugs and cap, pulley were done just prior to buying her (not the top of the line wires or plugs). other that that I did a complete tune up.

It has a custom CAI (see photo).

My guess: IAC, MAF or ECM or maybe fuel sensor or regulator issue.it seems as though it happens while driving on the highway/high speeds the having to stop and slow down for a traffic jam.

how long has this been going on? I had my car shut-off a couple times in one day, would restart fine, and drive fine, then did it again. Turned out to be a fuel pump, but hopefully that's not it. IF it is, you'll probably have it not restart sometime soon, also, when mine went out, if the car sat long enough, it would start, sometimes would even driven, but eventually, would die out again.

I'd say the IAC needs to be cleaned and/or replaced

I would check the pick-up coil and the ignition module and the coil pack. I had an 80 something Camaro( long time ago ) and it would cut off for no reason on the highway. All i would have to do is pull over on the side of the road crank it up and keep going. Finally figured it out and it was one of the three items mentioned above getting hot. Like i said it was a long time ago, sorry, but i would start there. Good Luck. Keep us posted.
My 0.02.

i'd eliminate all easy fixes before digging into something deep. the PU coil isn't exactly a 10 minute job, coil isn't either but it's easier than the pickup, and easier than the fuel pump.

I had a bad pickup coil and the symptoms were hesitation under acceleration, (normally top end accell) so i doubt it's ur trouble, could be a bad coil, but normally a coil is bad or good, and isn't so "tempermental". But everything's worth a shot, give em a try.

Are you getting a check engine light, or setting any codes?

I am not getting any codes or lights coming on. This weekend I am going to change the Ignition Module and clean out the IAC and see what happens.

You may want to check all the small rubber vacume hoses that run to the various emissions devices for a vacume leak. These can play havoc with the car's idle and during deceleration.

Nice looking car! The 1990 3.1's with the Trans Am appearance package were cool cars.

My car was doing that for a while i would be in traffic go to accelerate and it would kinda spudder and die. Then id go to start it and it would start right back up. I cleaned my TB and my IAC passage. USed some sea foam to clean the valves. That stuff works awsome. I also noticed i had an air leak in my intake hose so i got a new one of those. Havent had any problems since.

Do you have your IAT going into your CAI? I put mine in my intake at the same time you may want to look into that as well.

Thanks guys:lala:

here is a photo of how my CAI is setup.

I will check the hoses and I do have a can of sea form in the back of the car.

I will let you know how it goes this weekend when I have a chance to work on it.
