MPFI Book Recommendations?
Can anyone recommend a book on the mass flow systems on our V6 cars? I guess info on the speed density systems would also be interesting. I was looking around and see a few 3rd gen books but I can't tell if any of them do a decent job on the fuel delivery stuff.

Any Electronic Fuel Injection book is going to give you a pretty good idea of how things work. These systems aren't voodoo... fuel injection systems on, say, a honda, work no differently than our own. Little specific things change here and there, but nothing particularly drastic.
Exactly what degree of info are you looking for?

Yeah, I understand. I guess I'd like something specific to the 3rd gen cars that point the components out, talk about their specific electrical chaqracteristics, the differences over the years, diagnosis, characteristics of the ecm and data port.
I'm fairly astute on electronics and fuel injection so I'm not really interested in a general tutorial to FI. I'm looking for something targeted to the more intermediate user who needs to become familiar with the specifics of the 3rg gen systems. I'd like to play with the system a bit and trouble shoot and upgrade.
I've seen one or two books on 3rd gen cars on amazon, for instance. Will any of these books help in this area?

Kretos,
Its a odd twisted story but I got the car from a nice kid (he was probably ~20 but I'm an old fart) who didn't know too much about working on cars and if you saw the camaro you would agree. Anyhow, when I asked him about the engine I got a convoluted story about how he got a 3.1L engine from the wrecking yard but put all the 2.8L induction stuff on it so that means it was really a 2.8L. I tried to explain to him about bore and stroke and how even though it still said 2.8L on the intake it really displaced 3.1L. He just stared at me blankly.
Won't go into the details but the car was in a Chevrolet repair shop when I got it. The dealer actually noted on the invoice that the block ID showed it was a 3.1L motor.
I guess I have to admit that I have not verified this myself but I have the receipt from the wreckers stating that the engine the kid purchased was indeed a 3.1L and I have the mechanic at the dealers verification.
Where do I look if I want to be sure?

Best bet is to buy yourself the GM Service Manual for that year of car; you can buy them from http://www.helminc.com (they should also have a phone # if you don't want to order over the web). Someone on the general tech forum said that Helm is running a sale, and they got their book for only $40.
That'll tell you exactly what each component does, and how it figures into everything. It just won't go into detail on how the chip is programmed, but then again, no book will.
[edit] I just verified that sale for ya; yep, the '86 Camaro Service Manual is on sale for $30. The sale is for "in-stock" books only, and yours is in stock! I forget what they were going for, but I bought mine for $60 back in 1994!
In fact... maybe it's time I bought a new one (mine is falling apart)...

Thanks Tom,
I know about Helm and in fact I already knew the books were on sale for $30. I knew this because I just paid $26 for a worn used copy on eBay (I have not received it yet) and I decided to see "how good" of a deal I got by checking Helm. When will I learn not to look?
I had a good day at the local pick and pull today. They had at least 20 3rd gen camaros and firebirds. Got me an ECM bracket, now my ECM is no longer just stuffed up there on its own. Also got sun visors (a must have (-; ), a spare and spare hold down and several other little bits I was missing. It's pretty cool having a car that you can get just about any part you need at the local wrecker.

I've enjoyed reading through this book:
"Corvette Fuel Injection & Electronic Engine Management"
I just checked on bn.com and they show this book titled as "Corvette Fuel Injection and Electronic Engine Control: 1982 through 2001" (here: http://search.barnesandnoble.com/boo...37608619&itm=1 )
The correct title is "Corvette Fuel Injection & Electronic Engine Management
1982-2001", as shown on Bentley Publishers' page here: http://www.bentleypublishers.com/product.htm?code=gfcv
Any way, this book is published by Bentley Publishers and covers the fuel injection systems used on 1982-2001 Corvettes. It covers stuff on the Crossfire (L83), TPI (L98), LT1/LT4, LS1, LS6, and LT5 (ZR1) (see: http://corvetteactioncenter.com/specs/zr1/lt5specs.html).
The MPFI on these V6's is so similar to the TPI on the V8's that I have found the book useful/informative.
I don't know if this would be what you're looking for or not. I picked it up at the local Barnes & Noble. I would recommend skimming through it if you find it in a local bookstore.
I've also got a copy of "How to Build and Modify Chevrolet TPI Engines" by Jason Scott, but it has been too long since I read it, I can't remember how good it was.

Hi,
I found a book that filled my criteria. I'm about 1/3 the way through it and I give it high marks. That being said, I'm new to GM EFI so it may seem kind of lame to the better indoctrinated.
The book is "Computerized Engine Controls-2002 Update" by Watson and King. It's about 650 pages. It covers some basic electronics, fundementals of sensors and actuators and then goes into fairly detailed chapter by chapter summary of OEM systems. There are four chapters on GM FI. The carb based CCC systems, TBI, PFI, and "recent" systems. The book also covers Ford and other systems in later chapters.
The detail is excellent for my purposes, they do a thorough job of describing all systems, diagnostics, etc. It is geared toward Colledge level students and technicians seeking ASE certification.
It is available on Amazon but it is pricey. I got mine on eBay for about 1/8th the Amazon price.
