changes in 2.8 from 86-89

Hey all!

I have an old 86 2.8 engine block hanging around, it is from an 86 firebird, there was coolant in the oil which it has been sitting in for the past 2 years.

A friend of mine has an 89 2.8 which he took, out of a 89 camaro in running order. However the block is cracked. The oil is clean, and the innards are fine.

The plan on the drawing board here is to see if the innards from the 89 motor will work out in the 86 block. Of course usual things like new rings and gaskets and berrings and stuff will have to be done. The 86 bock will have to be cleaned up and such.

I am pretty sure it will work out fine, but I thought I would bounce the idea off you guys first.

I can't find too much information on block differences between these years.

Thanks for any help.

Yes, just keep EVERYTHING the same. Same pistons, in the same order - and put new mains, rods, and rings in it!!

Ya know, winter is soon ending!
Find a used running engine, then swap that in. Why work on old parts that need work.
Find a running project engine & stick it in & go.
Winter is ending soon.
Or is there a hockey strike up there, too, Eh?
You could even find maybe a 3.1 that was in wrecked car! Just make sure it's from an F-Body, Eh? No FWD engine swapping projects cause Winter is soon ending! Or is it the hockey strike?

Thanks for all the info.

I would go for a used engine, or go with a 3.1 or 3.4. I also don't like using used parts in an engine.

However..

This poor beater car is taking up space in my Grandma's back yard. I am just trying to get it running as cheaply as possible then I will sell it for pretty much whatever I can get for it.

The body is in good shape.

No worries, I still have the 89 bird.

Any other info you guys can offer, let me know.

Thanks again!
