ECM experts- MAF related

I may be way off base in this asumptions not knowing personally how a MAF eletronically reads air, but..

Can a 5 wire V8 MAF be wired into a 3wire V6 system by just not hooking the burnoff connection, AND just connecting the ground (blk/wht) to to one or both of the V8 MAF A(eng. ground) & B(analog ground) connections

V8 MAF /5 wire
A-Eng. Ground
B- Analog ground
C-Signal
D-Burn off
E- 12V

V6 MAF /3 wire
A-12V (org/blk)
B-Signal (brn/wht)
C-Ground

OR is the V8 MAF calibrated in a way that the V6 ECM would not read it?

Won't work... the V6 MAF is a frequency based MAF, outputting 32hz - 150hz, over a set calibration of 0-150g/s

The V8 MAF is voltage based, 0-5 volts, over a set calibration of 0-255 g/s.

Thanks Doward. Is there any option in MAF's that can be used for replacement performance wise? I was wondering if I could get a larger diameter maf for increased flow like the Granatelli units. They do make one for FWD3.1L cars but I know nothing about what they look like of compatability.

GN MAF, but you'll have to rescale the scalars/tables to be correct.

Honestly, I'd simply tune PE mode

The GN is 'theoretically' possible... but until I get some $$, I can't say YES THIS WORKS.

By GN, Im sure you are referencing the Grand National MAF. I'll check into them.

I really need to start learning this ECM crap so I can start figuring out what I can manipulate and do away with "legally" (smog wise) or somewhat fake so it looks there. There really is so much crap in this engine bay including the charcoal canister and the never used but working cruise control. I just noticed my PS pump is starting to leak out the snout behind the pulley- so another joyful project.

So far I plan to or have already deleted from the engine compartment-
1)Cruise control
2)Heater solinoid valve & related extra plumbing will be cleaned up
3)Brake proportioning valve (cockpit adjustable in the works)
4)stock WP- going to electric remote mount
5) TB coolant hardline- bypassed with earls 120* fitting and hose.
6) heat sheilds from exhaust manifolds
7) Brake booster- would love to go to a hydroboost and not worry about brake vacuum in the future with a bigger cam

8) I haven't even listed the things I'd love to start with but cant touch due to BS Calif smog laws like the EGR and related vacuum system & solenoids, the TB breather lines- heck, every single vacuum line and emissions crap that actually choles the engine and makes me press the throttle harder to go the same effort as if it wasn't there.....rant, rave

What else can I do away with that will not effect the computer (ECM) or can be deleted through the prom burning?

Air pump can be shut off via Prom (I'd gut it, and just have it as sort of a pulley)

EGR can also be disabled via prom

Fortunately I do NOT have a smog pump "factory" in '87. They burned clean enough that C.A.R.B. did not required the MPFI to have it in '87. Same with my '89 Chev 1/2ton 350. The "88's had it but the '89's were removed for production.

That picture below is factory routing. You can even see the affixed belt routing sticker showing the routing if the missing smogpump were required.

RTFC: Sorry to go off topic, but is that you Dean? Did you change usernames? Just curious so I know it's you when you're posting.
I was wondering because this is the second thread in the V6 forum where I've seen you use pictures from Dean's car.

Thanks!
