Swapped to 3.4, helpful hints for anyone attempting
Hello,
I finally got back from my tour in Kuwait and spent 3 weeks rebuilding my '91 RS. In the process I decided to swap to a 3.4 because the 3.1 was dead. I would have gotten the 3.8, but I was doing it myself and I had a 3 week deadline so I could drive it to work.
So I got an engine from a '93 Camaro 5speed, mine's an automatic. Here are some issues I ran into along the way:
Motor mounts:
switching the motor mounts appears easy. It is, sort of. You have to move the sensor on the right side of the block so it doesn't interfere with the 3.1 motor mount. Even with that moved, the top of the 3.1 mount hits a bump that's cast into the 3.4 block. I was able to torque the motor mount bolts and got it close, but it still sits at a slight angle. When I pu the motor in, I put in the left side mount pin first, then pulled on the tranny to get the right side to line up. After both pins are in, the rubber bushing allows the motor to sit right even though the mount is slightly off.
Distributor:
The 3.4 doesn't have a distributor. I had to pull the plug and install a new one (old 3.1 dist. was gross). The important thing here is making sure the timing is right.
Exhaust manifolds:
The 3.4 manifolds would have lined up, but I didn't want an oxygen sensor in each manifold just sitting there, so I switched to the 3.1 manifolds.
Intake:
Pretty straight forward, use the 3.4 injectors with the 3.1 fuel rail and intake. I had to switch out a sensor to get the right type of electrical connector
Oil pan:
Not a big deal
Torque converter:
Since the 3.4 was a manual, I had to chisel out a brass fitting in the end of the crank for the torque converter to slide on.
Everything else on the 3.4 was left there. The balancer, crank pully, water pump, oil pump, etc. The water pump return was 1 size smaller than on the 3.1, but I was able to use the 3.1 hose with 2 hose clamps and I haven't had any problems.
There were 2 or 3 sensors that don't connect to anything because my car doesn't have those connections. It still runs good. I had to get the idle adjusted with a scan tool, and that's about it.
Let me know if anyone has any other questions!

Maybe there are some different block castings out there? I don't know, there was a little lump that stuck out about 1/2" from the side of the block on mine.

Thanks for the additional information for a 3.1 upgraded to a 3.4.
I had no trouble with motor mounts.
I also used the 4th Gen V6 FRAME MOUNTS connected to my ORIGINAL VEHICLE ENGINE MOUNTS.
Beyond that yep every swap will be slightly different.
I have left my 3.4 manifolds as is due to why not? They don't leak with the Oxy Sensors.
Glad you safely returned to your home.
