Performance Ignition parts for 3.1?

Would it be worth the money to upgrade to better ignition parts? such as the Accel Cap/Rotor, Wires, Coil and plugs?

Or would I see the same results with generic plugs/wires/dist caps and rotors?

My old boss, old co-worker, and another friend started the company.

Appears they sold it to someone else, but are still making the plugs. Ones for our cars should be ready in about a month so the email said.

Did you notice an increase in performance with the performance ignition parts? Wether it be horsepower or torque or mileage...

If you have the MPFI with distributor (which I assume you do),
the best thing to go with is a good set of spark plug wires, a set of STOCK OEM AC DELCO steel tipped plugs (none of that platinum crap), and an Accel or MSD aftermarket coil. I personally prefer the Accel ignition coil. At the time I purchased mine, it produced the highest voltage out of all of them, I think it's still like 5,000 volts higher than the MSD.

In addition to going with these parts, I'd also recommend that you inspect, replace, or add ground straps, it'll help a fair amount.

Anyway, although you can build a little bit more horsepower by going with a SLIGHTLY larger gap (not much) when you use a high output coil... most of the power that you FEEL is actually power that was always there. Kind of hard to explain, but basically your motor sort of "runs out of breath" above 4,500 rpms.

It runs out of breath for a couple of reasons, the first is that the intake plenum is very restrictive at the neck, the second is because at the higher rpms, the capacitor that is the coil simply cannot produce a large enough jolt of electricity fast enough. Basically, the coil becomes inneffective over 4,500 rpms at producing the necessary voltage for optimal operation.

When you replace your STOCK ignition coil with an Accel or MSD aftermarket coil (about $10 more than an OEM replacement), you'll notice that above 4,500 rpms your motor will CONTINUE to build power... as apposed to the normal feeling of it starting to drop off.

It also improves your emissions, slightly better throttle response, and allows you to advance your timing a little bit as well.

It's a very inexpensive upgrade that gives a pretty decent amount of improvement. FYI, keep your stock one in the little compartment in the back.

One more thing... if you have a lot of cash to burn, you can get an MSD 6AL ignition box... I think they're like $250-300.

Just curious how much does everyone advance their timing? I just installed a MSD coil with Accel 8.8mm wires.

Since I rebuilt my engine with a 3.1 crank and rods... the timing mark no longer is accurate.

I advance my timing as high as I can go up till (but not including) the point at which my engine starts to ping. I also use high octane fuel so that I can advance the timing slightly more.

With the price of gas, I'm going to have to start going with regular 87 octane and detuning it slightly. I don't think I really gain that much more horsepower by going with the 93 and advancing the timing even more.

As far as I know, this ONLY works for carbureted cars.

If you know something I don't, PLEASE let me know... I would LOVE to have a Mallory distributor on my Fiero.

fyi, no more than 75 shot, right now, just gonna go with a 50 shot. 10% overdrive is what i am looking into for the blower or about 10 psi

my cardone is not a performance distrib. However, if you compare the two designs, mine is much better thought out.

I have posted pictures here before of it, but it was about 2 years (or more) ago.

money is not a factor in my decission, computer advance sounds better for me, since i need the computer anyway. i would go with the vacume advance, but i really don't like fooling around with the springs and counterweights again on another car, and i want to keep the computer advance there.
