what smog delete pulley are you talking about? i personally don't use one, i just took the smog pump off(called A.I.R pump) and found the correct belt to run. i don't believe that what i did is possible on the 3.1's without a idler pulley

The idler pulley that replaces the smog pump on some 60 degree V6s will work regardless of what engine you have; 2.8, 3.1, or 3.4. Redraif's 2.8 didn't come with an AIR pump or an idler, but we added the idler pulley later because the belt would whip slightly, which is probably why GM installed them on later vehicles. You don't technically "need" it, but it does keep the belt under control. Its installed on her 3.4 now.

Alls I did was get a shorter belt and left the SMOG pump out the loop. The belt I used was a 5060915 , I'd hate to see you reinvent the wheel on this one. I did notice a hp increase when I done it, however we have zero emission laws in Florida.
In my humble opinion, its worth the effort and $18 bucks for the belt.

LT1guy-
Is the idler pulley the same one that I have seen on the TPI Parts website for the V-8s? I want to remove the air pump but want to avoid the belt tension issues.

if you delete it and have tension issues, first make sure your tensioner isnt shot, then just get a belt thats the next size down, probably a half inch shorter. you should be just fine. when i deleted mine and got an underdrive pulley, i measured it w/ a string and then deleted 1.5 inches i believe to make up for tension. sometimes it takes a couple tries at the parts store, but it works.
