the tank in the suburban is huge probably over 20 gallons. the 3.1 only has like a 14 gallon tank

yeah tank percentage is absolutely useless, and imprecise.

the only accurate(ish) way to measure mpg is to fill the tank, set the trip odometer, drive around(the longer the more precise) and then fill the tank again. divide miles traveled by the number of gallons it shows on the pump and voila: mpg. its a good idea to do this every time you fill up, the only downside is that you have to completely fill the tank each time you get gas.

yea. the tank in your thirdgen is 14... or 12.. there were a few of those.. but the suburban has a tank of almost 30 gallons.. only way to do it is fill it up... set the trip, drive for a bit. then fill it up again.. take the milage on the trip and divide it by the amount of gallons put in the car. it will give you your mpg.. in a roungh type of measurement.. since driving conditions do affect it.

To actually answer your question, yes that is fine and good.
Mine used to go 340-350 a tank, even got 360+ a few times(straight highway). 92 5 speed.
The gas guage is "OK" till about 1/2 tank, then it gets funky. Hell mine would drop 1/4 tank in a day, but just at where the sender is at that part makes it act funny.

So you would really want to compare miles gone to actual gas put in, but yes that number even if on or about a true half a tank, is fine and heathly.

ive been getting 400-450 kilometers per tank for years thats 245-276 miles but i almost always fill before the gas light comes on. my tank isnt baffled and when gas is that low the car tries to stall during hard breaking/turning. the fuel pump is also liquid cooled.

have never gotten over 550 kilometers (336 miles) per tank as i recall. and thats since i got the car when it had 70,000 kilometers or 43,000 miles

i drive about 600kms a week = 368miles

just as a comparison on a 1/2 tank of fuel i get about 150 -160 miles.. and mine is a v-8 carbed.. so it really all depends on where you drive and how your drive.. if you sit in traffic alot or what.. but then i have a 16 gallon tank.. so i am using a little moe gas than u are but not much

since my sending unit is fubar, I just drive 150-200 miles and fill up.

I did a tune up, and it seems to take less gas now

I did figure up I was getting around 8-10mpg, now it seems to be about 17-20'ish. OO, I changed driving habits too.

I got 330 miles on my last tank (24 mpg). I am curious if headers and removal of the smog pump will give better gas mileage.

removal of smog pump does not really do anything at all.. I reoved the one from my 84 z and my *3 berly, and i did not see a change at all compared to the 84 berly with it on

I had been getting 17~18mpg in a '92 3.1 RS with 74,000 miles on the odometer, then I changed plugs, wires, rotor and cap (still need to check/adjust the timing) and now I'm getting 22~23 mpg.

Thanks TomP!!!

Wow, awesome! Plus check out that link I just posted about the Bosch oxy sensor and "gas card rebate", that should help you get a few more MPG too!

Would you believe I haven't tuned my car up at ALL this summer? Usually that's the first thing I did as soon as it got warm out!

I get close to 600 miles on a full tank (16 gallons) driving on the highway. A little less when I drive in the city.

That is possible. I am getting about 600 miles in my car per tank on a 16 gallon tank (not an f-body though) I would think he was probably giving us his mpg on his rotary thing... Mine is a 2.4 / 5spd sunfire getting it.. so it is possible... so not very probably in an f-body lol.

As for the 14 gallon tanks.. there were lots of cars with the 14 gallon tank. mostly the 4 cyl cars... and some 6 cyl... The manual gives the spec that is the most common... but I have yet to find one that cover's all possibilties...

Hello again,
I keep my car well tuned and it is very close to the 600 mile range I am getting. I pretty much only travel on the highway and my 4 banger does really well on gas. I know considering the weight factor and all, but I get really good gas mileage.

mabe a bit off topic but is it a clean swap from my stock tank to that out of an IROC? or is there a bunch of exterior differences?

shouldn't be that hard at all to swap tanks from one camaro to the other.. the only thing you may have to do is also get the straps from the other car that hold the tank up. And you can get the 15.5 ~16 gallon tank out of an assorment of cars. all of my berlinettas came with the large tank... as did the z28.. so i figure the sport coupes and RS and Iroc will have them as well... as long as they had a 305 in it...

I pull 29-33 mpg w/ mine 2.8l 5 speed. If you look at any car, most cars are set up so that the car will go aprox. 300 - 350 miles per tank of gas. The reason being, that, after sitting for 300 miles, your ready for a break...and getting gas is a great excuse...try this if you dont believe me...next time you go on a road trip, take your camaro/firebird, and have a friend take something else...say, a big truck or van or something...chances are, eventhough your tank is 15.5 gallons (most seem to be in camaros/firebirds) and the other vehicle is in the upwards of 20-30, you both will need gas at the same time.

now that you bring that up it seems true.
there are cars that seem to violate this though but usually not by much.

isnt a honda insight a hybrid car? The ones that seem to go over the 300 - 350 mark are the hondas and other inports...and a few like the sunfire. But they also take a bag of small rodent food to keep the mice that run the thing happy
