Ok here is my situation. i have a 91 3.1 r/s , one of my friends dad is gonna giva me his ol 79 chevy truck. for $100,.the front seal went out on it and he claims the trans compleatly went out.,

seeing how by now i can practicly replace these th350's blind folded, i feel its a great deal [i realy need a truck],.BUT... my only problem is getting it home!! i want to tow it aproximitly 18 miles with my camero.,there is only one hill to climb that is about 90* i have a tow hitch already on my camaro.,can this be done with out harm to the car,.will it f.u.b.a.r my 700r4?

if it is possible could some one tell me how i should set the trans when towing should i use 1st or 2nd.,or just o.d or regular drive.,.,i dont want to ruin my ride.,,.all imput encouraged

A 90* hill? I call that a wall or cliff.

Anyway, why not have it towed by a towing company? Might save you several hundred dollars in repair bills. In reality the likelyhood that something will happen to your tranny is slim, but what were you going to attach between the Camaro and the truck?

 

If you have AAA, I'd just call them and have them tow the truck.

 

spend the money and get it towed, shouldn't be more then 50 bucks for 18 miles

 

ok 90* is most likly incorect.,[my fault]im limited on funds right now .,.so i wont be able to afford any towin company.,the hill im talking about is not to bad! very short in fact .. would tow chain work or tow rope,..,the truck runs the trans is just shot.,,.,..,so i would be able to ride in the truck while the camaro pulls me.,.,.,

yes i dont have a way for my insurance to tow me but i might know someone who could do it but most likly thell bi*** about it.,.,i just wanna do this my self get it to my house befor im to late

 

Keep it locked in 1 or 2...boosts line pressure.... Make sure your trans fluid level is good, try not to make the trip too long....dont do any jerky or hard throttle movements with it... If it feels like it's starting to slip or rev up higher than normal, stop.

 

I personally would not recomend it, especially in an auto car. A manual MAYBE with a GOOD clutch.

 

i towed a guy with a four cylinder vw rabbit two miles with my manual 2.8. all i had was a ****ty tow rope, i wrapped it around my panhrd bar (i think. the higher of the two bars in the back). i would not recomend towing a vehicle with a firebird. they are not designed for it. you don't know anyone with a car trailer or a big truck?

 

well the buddy i know with a truck just doesent want to help and return a favor .,.,i helped him not only move to a new house but i rebuilt his truck..for one heck of a freindly discount,.leaving me oweing me later on !! oh well its just somthing ima have to do myself!!!

I just hope nothing goes wrong,..,i realy need this truck

One thing to think of... I doubt the brakes on the Camaro could stop this "train". Don't get yourself (or anyone else that might step out in front of you) hurt!!

 

does anyone remember for sure what you can use to swell the seals and "band-aid" a bad tranny? i think it was paint thinner, but i don't remember. i either used paint thinner or ps fluid to get a 72 dodge p/u to my house from about 10 miles away once, and it worked great...

 

Brake Fluid work really well for swelling rubber

 

rent a u-haul w/some 5k tie down straps. get a better friend to help.

 

just tow it and go slow,youll be fine.

as long as your takeoffs are very slow it should have no problem pulling another vehicle.


dont go over 30mph or take any sharp turns.

 

Whats the raiting on the hitch?

You'll prolly blow the tranny halfway, and thats if the hitch doesn't break. pickup is prolly around 5000lbs if its a 4x4, maybe even more. I think your being silly.

ya i backed out i dont wanna risk it,..,it had one sweet motor in it a 5.7 carbed.,edel brock intake oh and the i missed out on the 295/50/15 on that sucker but im not sure if they woulda fited on my camaro any way.,.,oh well i guess ever thing happens for a reason!!!!!!.......

 

If you really have the suburban, 89 chevy truck, or the s10. I'd use one of them. That or make good friends with someone that does have.

hell,i know my duke will pull a heavy load,i have pulled quite a few things with a duke s10,so i know your v6 would be enough.

have faith in your vehicle and it will never let you down.[hopefully]

 

for 1 I would of just done it and wouldn't even think about it. Just find a solid place to pull from. Not like you have load weight, it all rolling weight. Not hard at all to pull / push with anything.


2nd if you were still to chicken I would of least stripped the car on site. yank your front seat and strip that motor into parts in 1hr. with in 3-4 hrs id have most of the car in pieces and stuffed all over inside mine but evenly spread out. Then been back for more. As a junk yard will take it for free in any condition, no tires or what not.

 

I pulled my 1983 chevy van G20 for 20 miles at slow speeds(up to 40 mph) with my 1988 GMC Jimmy 4x4 2.8 Automatic. Keep the speeds slow and you will do just fine. My G20 has a 700r4 and I town things with it all the time. Just keep the transmission in 3rd gear.
