3.1 A.I.R. question

I have a 3.1 and I want to take out the smog pump. I will be putting on headers next summer but I want to get the smog pump out now. Does anyone know if there is a plug for the 3.1 manifold?

i don't remember what it has in the manifold now but, it its threaded in, you'll more than likely need some sort of pipe fitting to go in there. i don't know what size to tell you, though. why not just leave it until you put the headers in?

I had problems finding one, I ended using something close, jamed it in, and got some sort of exhaust "expoxy" type stuff that gets harder the hoter it gets.

I'd leave it tell you get headers unless it is broken.

I know it would just be easier just to leave it on and do it all at once but I was just looking for something to putz around with. I havent heard of such a plug so more than likely I will be waiting and doing it all at once but i was just looking for some busy work.
If anyone does know of such a plug please let me know. Thanks

don't go with brass plugs, shoudl be around 1/4 to 3/8 NPT size. i don't remember offhand, but it is a pain to get the pump itself off without cutting the hoses.... i did one on my buddy's firebird. it was worse than the one on my camaro, and that was a realy big pain in the ****.

Cause I got a welder handy. I would just reuse the fittings off the lines, just weld them shut. Could do them in place if real lazy.

That sounds much easier: Snip the AIR tube off ~1/4" away from the tube nut and hit it with the arc for the whole 1/2 second it would take to seal it shut. Could even do it without ever removing the tube nuts. It SUCKS to remove that whole assembly. Took me 30 minutes: Open ended-wrenches and seized fittings.

On my '80 Trans Am with the Pontiac 301, I used JB Weld (actually Permatex's cold weld). In my case, I had two large openings to fill - one on each head. I tried to use freeze plugs, but I couldn't find a size that fit.

I cleaned out the openings really well and sanded a little bit just inside the hole. I put the (too small) freeze plugs in the holes and jammed a wad of cold weld on top of each plug so that it overlapped the plug and touched the inside walls of the hole. It's holding strong a couple years later.

You could conceivably do the same in your small threaded holes, but without the freeze plugs.
