3.1 & 2.8
I found a 3.1 with computer wiring harness and everything. I have a 2.8. Do I need to use the 3.1 ECM and such? Are the injectors bigger than the 2.8's? Ill have alot of extra parts like intake plenums, heads, valve covers, exhaust manifolds, and then when I swap Ill have my 2.8 for sale... Is anyone interested in any of that stuff? Im gonna buy it ASAP if I everything is ok but I dont wanna have all these parts laying around. I need to know what I need for the swap tho and fast. Thanks, Baron

Depending on the 2.8, you will need to swap over only the throttle body, possibly the upper plenum. The rest of the stuff HAS to stay with the 3.1, since it does not use the cold start injector common on 86-88 F-body V6's, and the fuel line routing (across the front of the engine) is different. When you do the swap, REPLACE THE WATER PUMP. You don't know how good the one on the 3.1 is, if it is good, and it's only $20 to replace yourself, rather than $200 for someone to replace for you when you break down
. Keep the same emissions hose routing (vacuum hose routing).
BTW, I'm desperate for an upper plenum now. Can you help for cheap?

Sure how much you looking to spend on one? Ill even polish it up for you. For the 3.1 or the 2.8?? The one on my 2.8 has a slight port a polish.... So I basically dont need anything from my 2.8?? Im gonna end up doing custom fuel lines for my custom rails.

What would I do with the rubber hoses on the back of my upper plenum on the 2.8. Arent they for the brakes and something else??

What are you wanting to do?
1. Swap in a newer bigger block?
2. Change from maf to map and go bigger block?
Answer 1, follow the "3.4 boogie" post, its basically same thing.
Answer 2, pull old engine, and harness, and ecm, drop in new one. Then figure out what to do with the speedo cable/vss. Then over ride the vats.
PS. If the 91 ecm is from a manual car, you have a buyer. PM me and let me know.

Are you wanting to keep the 3.1 ecm and injection system? Or just want to put the bigger newer block in and keep the current ecm/injection system.

I wanna put the 3.1 in there and get the most performance out of it possible. My guess would be using the ECM and injectors it came with.....?

Peformance will be about the same. The 2.8 ecm is easier to modifiy if I understand correctly.
Easier will be keep the 2.8 ecm and injection system. Thus follow the "3.4 boogie" swap, you will just be installing a 3.1.

Use your ECM and wiring harness, and everything mounted to the engine from the lower plenum up. That's it. Everthing else stays with the 3.1. Swap over your accessories and vacuum lines. The larger tube at the plenum T is for the brake booster, the other one should be for the cruise control modulator and HVAC control head. If you like the color of your valve covers (the later model ones are black instead of silver or if you have painted yours), swap them over as well. The FelPro MS93020 intake gasket kit ($30) includes all of the gaskets needed to do the swap. You also want to pick up a set of injector o-rings (GP Sorenson 800-9220, $15).
DO NOT FORGET TO REPLACE THE WATER PUMP! If you are NOT sure the one on the 3.1 is good, replace it as cheap insurance. It's a lot easier to spend $30 now rather than however much for a tow and someone to replace it for you!
BTW... I had my plenum fixed. I don't need a new one now.
:edit: DO NOT USE THE 3.1's PCV SYSTEM WITH THE 2.8's INTAKE! The TB gets a large amount of air through the large plastic hose that connects to the TB, and you will have a bit of trouble starting the engine if you do not swap over the 2.8's hose. This hose also runs the charcoal can.
