That engine may come with a balancer. But your 3.1 should work, but I didnt try that.
3.1 wp will be fine.

Also, some waterpumps are different. This depends if if your running v-belts, or serpentine belts.

Need to becareful here. Some of the 2.8's are external balanced which means the balancer and fly/flex matches the crank. Some are internal, which means all parts are by itself.

The only parts you need to swap from the 3.1 are the fuel rail and upper plenum (maybe the intake manifold to heater core pipe), and the accessory brackets and accessories, along with any possible sensors that don't match. The fuel injectors and everything below stay with the 3.4. Do a water pump and as many gaskets as you can while the engine is out.

3.4 manifolds have o2 sensors in them. They dump in very similar place. I know one person who didnt even change these and was able to make a 2.8 y-pipe bolt up to them.

Re: Dales 3.4 swap tech artical.
Hi, I finaly started my swap, i already installed my 3.1 intake manifold to my 3.4 block, but i have another problem, i don't have any reference to continue, there are alot of wires, pipes, brackets, i want to do it as good as possible, as close to original factory conditon as possible, when everythingis on its palce, all the stuff is routed and mounted as it should be, can someone point source with detailed info on thirdgen 3.1 engine installation, or atleast detailed photos to see how is all the stuff mounted and assembled. Making photos from my own car before dissasembly would not make sense, because i already got it abused, partialy disassembled and "repaired" by some asssholes.

I dont have a 3.1 anymore. Someone else will have to help here on that. However, if I remember right, other then the fuel rail harness. You should beable to fully assemble the top, then route the main engine harness around and where it needs to go.

@alienbishop
Between this link https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/v6/6...-fasteddi.html and this link https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/powe...o-time-v3.html there are many pictures of a 3.1L assembled.
There should be enough pics to help you a tad on what the engine looks like when assembled correctly. The only bad thing is I dont have any emmisions at all hooked up. I have tons of pics on my computer even when it had emmisions so just pm me for specific pics if you want.

Re: Dales 3.4 swap tech artical.
I think this belongs here, if not let me know and I'll delete it and create a new thread. So it looks like I'm going to buy a used/reconditioned short block to replace the 2.8L in my '89 camaro. So this may be a stupid question but since the 2.8/3.1/3.4 are so similar could I buy a 3.4 short block and use parts from my 2.8 and bolt it up? Would I need new heads and possibly other parts? Better to just buy a long block? Thanks.
