highway RPM

what do youguys normally run on the highway? i noticed the other night that my car runs 2500 at 65 and 3000 at 70. does that sound normal? i checked on the gear calculator on this site and it says that even with 4.11 which i really dont think i have the tach should only say 1800 not 3000. the tach is an aftermarket equus about 2 months old and when i run it hard can feal the power plateu right where it says 4500 to 5000 so it shouldnt be that much off should it? I am just wonderin cause my car uses 1/4tank of gas for a 15 min drive at 65mph with the cruse control on or off. have checked everything else and it all checks out.

Sounds like your not going into 4th. I think I'm at like 2200 rpms at 75 - 80mph.

Yup, way high on the RPMs, sounds like your not driving in OD, or you have no fourth gear, and your torque convertor isn't locking up.

I run around 2200-2500 at 75ish

make sure u dont have the tach set on 4 cyl, cause then the tach would read high and 1,800 with 4:11's @ 65 isnt right either 4:11's in 3rd gear would be jaround 3,300 rpm depnding on tire size and around 2,700-3,000ish in 4th

2500 to 3000 rpm is correct. not to mention this fluctuats when acendin and decending hill's,,, im runnin the same in my 91 r/s 3.1 so i dont think you have any thing to worry about..sometimes when im rollin 65mph. i baby the throttle up a lil to lower the rpm's a lil just to try and save as much fuel as possible,.,.,.also check to see if yer ideling at around 900 rpm's warmed up!.,.,.,

not to mention there are so many other factors there like tire pressure, size, air intake,.restricted or not., tps sensor,.,. im not sure though if the iac would have any thing to do with it but why not check it out any way

Lets see here tires 215/65-R15, pressure 32lbs, TPS good- checked cause it was adjusted wrong, air filters 3 months on them alil dusty but not near cloged, this is running down an area of highway that i hve yet so hear a semi downshift or even loose speed on so its perty flat, Idle is 550 to 600 kinda choppy but every thing on the engine checks out so its not anything wrong, EGR dont work its the only code the car throws but i dont have $100+ to buy a new control thing.

Edit: gottfuel is your car getting really bad gas mileage?
Also howmany of you stock 2.8 guys can get your cars to do a burnout on pavement? i can, hell i even gets some smoke off of them i was a bit surprised it actually had the ***** to do so. just figured id throw that out. will running rich make more power or just kill it?

xplane, I'm running the same tach on my 2.8 (just installed it last night), and while driving it never reaches above 4grand. It idles around 800-900 rpm when warmed up (1500rpm on cold starts). At about 30mph I'm at aprox. 2500rpm.

Question for you though.. did you wire the tach directly to the coil or did you use the in line sensor on one of the plug wires? I had to use the sensor becuase I couldn't find the proper wire to hook it up to.

As for the burnouts, I can get mine all smokey if I do a brake stand. or if the weather is really cold... I even had my tires chirp when it shifted into second gear once... thought that was awsome... can't get it to do it again though.

larger then normal tires. (235/60/15)
3.23 (higher gears then should)
5speed(.76)
tach that reads 500'ish over.

At 70, I get 3000 rpms.(tach adjust, 2500'ish)

its is wired in properly to the right wire not the spark cable but the one from the coil. heck when i had the 14s on here they had about 1/16inch of tread was getting the new ones later that day so i burned the little bugger till it had the steel showin. with the Z sized tires once they get hot it has trouble keepin it up but i think that has more to do with the Auto than anything else.

I have to guess your car isn't shifting to fourth and/or TC lockup issue. I'm not a tranny expert though, so I can't say for sure.

3000 rpm in my car is about 100mph. At 75 I think I'm around 2000, but can't remember for sure. I haven't driven it since August.

And 1/4 tank of gas in 15 minutes at 65? You shouldn't be going through that much gas. It takes me about 45 minutes at 65'ish just to go through 1/8 of a tank. (going by the gauge marks anyway)

I can as long as my tires havent heated up, otherwise it just makes the car jump a bit then they grab. But I also have a 5spd making it considerably easier.

I also get ~3000 RPM at 120 KM/h (75MPH I think). We are all talking about 2.8 engines no? I also get a egr code even though my egr vlave is brand new so I supose i need a new selenoid.

there is a iffy line to running rich, a tad to rich for a tad to long can ruin an engine from cylinder wash.

I dont know that it is running rich and if it is it is through the ECUs control not mine. I ws just asking if that would cause the huge fuel use that this thing sees on the high way. not to mention around town which is worse than ANY vehicle i have owned. the only plus side is that it has just enough ummph to beat any car i have raced sept for the 350 IROC that runs around town.

I dont know xplane.,.,I have two, a 88 camaro and an 91 R/S ,., and thats about right 2.500k rpm,.at 65mph sometime 3k when acceleratin up hills.,

i also feel that perhaps our rpm;s could run a lil higher if you are in need of rear shock's springs.,.,seems like there would be some degree of LAGING , increasing enursha!

now i cant posibly be the only one here who can get her to 65 and then baby the rpm down ,yet still maintain 65 mph,.right? althought i do admit i am heavy footed most all times just not with my girl in the car., she wont let me

my rings are still fresh so im gonna see what min rpm's i can do to travel at 65mph today on flat desert hwy., and ill post my results for today,.when i get home from work.,

You know its wierd. Even though I get 3000rpm at 120km/h I still have the standard 12L/100KM fuel consumption. That is the standard no, for a 2.8?

lockup is dependent on speed, engine temp, and what gear you are in...

had a speedo cable get bent once, so the needle was flopping between 25-45 (lockup is around 35).... you guessed it--a firebird doing the humpety-hump down the highway as it locked and unlocked...
