won't start

Transmission: 700 r4
won't start

I just replaced the head gaskets on my 2.8L and I can't get it to fire. Besides timing what could I be over looking.
If I hold the pedal down I can hear it, i guess backfire, i see little puffs of smoke but it will not start. Any suggestions?

no, it's MPFI. I guess I could take the tube off the TB and try that.
