Where is your general location? That maters as well.

Can be anywhere between 5w30 to 20w50

I swear by 20-50 every car, all my life.
[duralub works, saved 3 cars for me that should of died from over heating.]

though am in the mist of trying some 15-40 cause thats all Rotella comes in. see my ph3980 thread

but I have run 20-50 for near 7 years, year round 220000 miles. car loves it, oil psi is steady and high. I feel safer when I run to redline with more cushion for the pushin of metal parts around. [I fear no start up wear with DL]

Flip Side

I run straight 30w oil in my T5 tranny, instead of ATF like the book says.
Same deal. Good cushion for the gears but still thin enough to get into bearings n stuff. [T5 is a stick, not an auto.]

I'd say 10w40, maybe 20w50 in the dead heat of summer. watch the oil gauge as well.

I must be the only one that runs 5-30 in the winter and 10-30 in the summer. I drive the hell out of the thing (60+ mile commute per day) and have 251,000 mi. on the engine. No knocks or lifter ticks. I just make sure to change the Oil and Filter every 3K and it's always been fine.

Gonna dump the rotella ASAP. I don't like the oil pressure difference.
I spend to much time idlin around in 5th gear and it 8psi+ lower with rotella 15-40. Gotta go back to 20-50 for the peace of mind.

If you were wondering about brand (Mobil vs Valvoline vs Quaker State vs etc), it really doesn't matter as much. You might not want to put the cheap no-name oil in your car, but that's up to you.

And if you're deciding on brands and can't pick... think about what the companies do. Quaker State is usually the most visible company sponsor for off-road racing/activities. Mobil 1 comes in all new Corvettes. Valvoline's slogan is "the #1 mechanic's choice". It's just who contributes more to your sport. (I use Valvoline.)

And then you could get into company mergers and all that... for instance, Pennzoil merged with Quaker State, then Shell Oil bought out Pennzoil-Quaker...

You might not want to use synthetic oil on an old high-mileage engine; the molecules are smaller and you may get a ton of leaks (where the gaskets have worn out).

Think the rule should be if your car is use to 20-50 keep using 20-50.

yike, it was hot, got stopped by a train, never seen my oil psi go so low.
Car is cooling off as I type to change oil. Only gone like 300 miles maybe since the change 299 to many.
